Oh, Those Death Panels

You would think that if Republicans wanted to totally mischaracterize a health care provision and demagogue it like nobody's business, they would at least pick something that the vast majority of them hadn't already voted for just a few years earlier. Because that's not just shameless, it's stupid.
Yes, that's right. Remember the 2003 Medicare prescription drug bill, the one that passed with the votes of 204 GOP House members and 42 GOP Senators? Anyone want to guess what it provided funding for? Did you say counseling for end-of-life issues and care? Ding ding ding!!
Let's go to the bill text, shall we? "The covered services are: evaluating the beneficiary's need for pain and symptom management, including the individual's need for hospice care; counseling the beneficiary with respect to end-of-life issues and care options, and advising the beneficiary regarding advanced care planning." The only difference between the 2003 provision and the infamous Section 1233 that threatens the very future and moral sanctity of the Republic is that the first applied only to terminally ill patients. Section 1233 would expand funding so that people could voluntarily receive counseling before they become terminally ill.
So either Republicans were for death panels in 2003 before turning against them now--or they're lying about end-of-life counseling in order to frighten the bejeezus out of their fellow citizens and defeat health reform by any means necessary. Which is it, Mr. Grassley

It's amazing. I had the TV on this morning and the talking heads were discussing death panels. I don't think I have ever heard such nonsense. They might as well have been talking about whether Obama's plan will allow martians to perform surgery.

Aside from the GOP's obvious dishonesty on this issue, it is just odd that they would pretend to oppose end-of-life planning. What kind of human being opposes that? Back in the spring and early summer, their big argument was that we are better off with judges who are not able to empathize. Now this. It is so strange. It's even stranger that their death panel lie seems to be helping them in the polls.

God help us.

 Can that really be true? When did any of Bush's initiatives get held up over something this dishonest and stupid?

And to pretend that the Dems stymied Bush for 8 years ignores history. That guy had a post 9-11 honeymoon that lasted at least 5 years.

helpplease 08-14-2009 09:43 AM

Txjake your statement makes no sense......Bush got away with mountians of things! And secondly this article is about how the GOP agreed to fund the end-of-life panels.

Yes, jake, I remember that whole campaign of falsehoods the lefties waged against Bush over those WMDs.

In Medicare (At least, for now...), you get to pick and choose.

In "O-care" - forget the choice...it will be made for you...

There's the difference.

Small.

But, final.

And you base this statement on what?

kerry 08-14-2009 02:28 PM

Why doesn't the mainstream media simply report these ideas as false. I wonder what the media would do if Palin stated that the Obama administration was going to arrange for the demon possession of its opponents.

It Bleeds, It Leads

Currently [even with a world collapse of the financial system in progress] there
Ain't enough Fodder for the Fourth Estate.
[The President and some members of Congress are "Taking Care of Business"]
'Nothing even remotely newsworthy in that ,
when compared to the IDIOCY that's being presented by Toadies,Lobbyists and other assorted Carbon Based Life Form Trash working at Republican behests.

Mr. Kerry,
The Semi-Demonic Possession has already taken place and is evident on the nightly news..."Right Wing-Nuts" however cannot be equated with Demons,
not bright enough to qualify...

Lets see, the Dems say there is no such thing as death panels (of course those words were never used, but you get the idea). But now they have taken that provision out of the bill. Hmm, I wonder how they removed something that didn't exist?

They'd report, naturally. They'd have to.

You see, the liberal media reports on this death panel thing because they hate Obama. Wait a minute. Maybe it's because they report what sells, gets people talking, and gets people watching to see what who will say next.

mgburg 08-15-2009 05:08 AM

It was reported in the papers that the "death options" are being tabled, or better yet, pulled from the legislation all together.

EOS.

Yeah...right!

This crap will creep right back in as soon as SOMETHING is passed...

Once the goobermint gets its tenticles in any healthcare and eliminates the competition...DPs will be all the rage...

And the first to try out the plan?

Anyone that held up the passage of "O-Care" to begin with...

Mandatory seat belt useage...anyone?
