A moment of silence, please

May we have a moment of silence, please. The King died thirty-two years ago today. I did not realize that Elvis was only forty-two at the time he died. Wow! That's young. Of course, back then forty-two was pretty old.

Thank you. Thank you very much . . . .

I cannot resist...

"Elvis had left the building..."

I love the music and have some of his original 78 rpm records like 'Hound Dog/Don't Be Cruel" which was the only record in which both the A and B sides became top 10 hits.

It is a shame we lost him so young. He could still be out there putting on great shows and sharing his wonderful voice with us.

Now...the interesting part of this thread can begin...

WHERE were you and/or WHAT were you doing when you first heard the news?

Me?

I was in Milwaukee, a staff member at a Boy Scout camp, Camp Ammon, at the WI. State Fairgrounds. The camp itself was within (and encompassed) the old West Allis Ice Skating Rink (concrete oval...Eric Heiden trained there during the 70s/80s for his Olympic Run)...the whole camp was assembled for "daily announcements" when the news of EP's death was read over the loudspeakers...with over 180 testosteroned munchkins and about 30 music-loving adults...the only thing I think anyone heard for about 15 seconds was the hum of the amplifier over the loudspeakers, the grass growing under our feet and our own hearts beating ever-so lightly under our khakis (Yah, I know, we all wore the Boy Scout Uniforms...all the way down to the little red tab-thingies on the knee-highs with the shorts...pretty dorky, eh?)...

Then, for the rest of the Camp...it was 24/7 Elvis on the PA...mornin', noon and at night...

Funny thing...for some strange reason, everytime I hear this bit about today being EP's Death Anniversary...I get a little hint of the "essence of bossie" and a hint of cream-puffs mixed in with that memory...

I was at my grandparents lake house playing their old radio/phonograph combo. I heard the news come over 77WABC NY (they used to play music then) My grandparents were more the Guy Lombardo types , but my aunt had always loved Elvis. We played his 78 rpm records the rest of the day while she cried.

I still have them...

a few weeks ago, I was visiting a restaurant that had a juke box. someone was playing Elvis songs. what a voice. and, he was the voice of a generation, a generation that is gradually fading away, which is sad. Elvis Presley, a voice and a presence unlike any other.

I never was much of an Elvis fan actually. I mean aside from the five velvet Elvis painting in my living room and my two Elvis costumes in the hall closet and all of those records and chachkies I got fro Graceland, I could care less about him . . . .
