Looking at this old SL

http://medford.craigslist.org/cto/1311748294.html

Do you think that i'ts worth the money? How would it do as a daily driver as it is not a show car.

Hard to tell without seeing it in person. If you dont mind crappy paint and it's been taken care of, sure why not. Wasn't aware they had a 6 cylinder SL in the 80's.

Looks pretty good to me, except for the auto transmission. I would love having one of those with the M110 engine. Go ask the guys on the SL forum- I am sure you will get an opinion or two.

The PO may claim it was daily-driven and perhaps that is the case, but don't kid yourself!!! It is still a very-old car and will require $$$ to keep operational.

My guess is that financial circumstances made the car a less-than-economical option as a daily driver as of late...

Well, ...... MAYBE..

The straight six is a wonderful engine, one of Mercedes Benz' best ever.

It will be busy hauling around all this weight, so consider it mostly a cruiser. Not so fast, but could be a reliable car, hopefully it should have all the books and records.

Run away if you see rust ANYWHERE, of if there is evidence it was a refugee from a freeway pile up.. ANYWHERE !!! Brian is right, a proper paint job could cost $7,000 or more. Suspension parts, motor mounts, inop. HVAC and other things can boost the cost a LOT.

Check the book and records!! These cars will run a LONG time with deferred maintenance, often the case with 6th or 7th tier owners that cannot afford to properly maintain them.

And for some reason the BLUE dashboards ALWAYS
crack on these Mercedes Benzes. ONLY the blue ones. Something in the fibres.

May or may not need a timing chain, though they are not so long and critical as on the V8 models that require them every 100k. They have robust automatic transmissions that should last about 250,000 miles.

If you buy it it qualifies for the free Mercedes Benz high mileage badge, (155,000 miles = 250,000 kms. Download the form from your computer and take it to the dealer to sign off, then mail it in.

If the PPI comes back OK, and you like the car and it is up to date mechanically, the price is all right, I think.

These are timeless classics. Not many were the family's only car, so most of them have pretty low mileage.

Don't forget you will have to buy a hardtop stand or hardtop hoist for it, which could cost another $700 for a good one, if it is not included in this sale.

And yeah, GIRLS like them. You need to know that, if you don't already.

I bought an 86 560SL for $1000...rusty, seats looked like a dog ate them, but it was fast and it was a great summer beater. Condition makes all the difference with 107's, and if it's a beater, let it deteriorate, if it's a keeper, plan to throw $$$ at it to keep it up.

With the twin cam 280, it should outrun a 4.5 or 3.8. A proper paint job may cost up to 7 grand, but we are talking a driver here, not a show car. A thousand dollar paint job would be fine for a driver. If you can wrench yourself, parts arent all that bad, with the exception of SL specific parts.

Your price is way too high here...You can get a stand off of ebay for about $100, same for a hoist. That's how I got mine, and they work great!

Girls to like them, but mostly the girls in the 30-50 year range...get a ricer if you want a younger girl! LOL

If you're content to run it as-is and limit expenditures to maintenance and safety/reliability repairs, you might be ok. Once you do so little as to send it to Maaco for a cheap paint job, your financial funeral services will commence.

The paint thing I think is being a little overplayed. The euro 110 is very robust and the euro 107 will be lighter, in the low 3000s. That car would be a pleasure especially with a manual....a fiver even better. Its not worth a full blown resto but it can give you a lot of fun for not too much dough, probably.

I agree with all the above. My old friend has a 83 380SL with V-8. He bought it for 3,000 and has put a grand into it for fuel injection parts and tranny maintenance. Lots of simple cheap maintenance makes these cars last if used.

Well, girls do tend to go for convertibles.. though the 107 isn't exactly a cute car.. very old fashioned looking.
