Who is "The Stig"?

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/08/17/stigs-identity-voted-as-biggest-mystery-of-the-century/

The assassination of John F. Kennedy? The existence of the Bermuda Triangle? Bah! What Brits really want to know, more than anything else, is the true identity of the Stig. This according to a poll conducted by British tabloid the Daily Star under the esteemed auspices of Doritos, all to arrive at one startling conclusion: According to the average Brit, the Stig's identity is the greatest mystery of the last 100 years.

Top Gear's tamed racing driver took nearly a quarter of the votes, with the Loch Ness Monster coming in with 16% ahead of JFK's 12. Of course, if people really wanted to know who's hiding under the white helmet, they'd have figured it out by now. In fact, there have been numerous reports on his true identity, but like His Stiginess' loyal subjects, we'd rather keep the mystery alive... which is more than we can say for the late Black Stig, may Stig have mercy on his soul.

Which Stig? There's been more than one and the most recent "white" Stig has been 'outted."

Perry McCarthy, a former Formula 1 driver, was the original Stig, wearing black overalls for his appearances.

Ben Collins has been cited as the current replacement, although Schumi was on the show and lifted off the helmet, though there are doubts that it was an honest bit.

I want to be the Stig. I'd give various body parts to be able to drive the cars that it has access to and to be able to drive that well.

Always wondered. Stig didn't have to be a huge-name driver, he just had to be very good and consistent on the track. I always figured it would be someone who I didn't recognize.

I hope they never reveal who Stig is. It would be like a magician telling you how the trick was done. I like the way they interact with the Stig.

I remember there was an apparent sighting of the new white stig and it was an F1 driver, can't remember the name. He's not a big name driver, does other pro gigs as well (test driver). Not sure how legit that info is.

Loved the Schumacher Stig bit, that was a funny surprise.
