Didn't you read? There was plenty of green involved; there was too much of it and it needed to be cut down

She's not complaining. I've been to those parts and its different. What are usually opulent luxuries for most people are necessities. You CAN'T let the grounds go to weed. At most you can close up the pool and maybe sell a car. Still I wouldn't be running off to fancy parties munching on lobster bisque when there is sewage flooding the basement. That's just not me. Different priorities, I guess.

No sympathy here either.
She's probably a witch and her ex-husband had enough of her lifestyle.
Kids sound like a bunch of spoiled brats too.
That is what it sounds like to me too. If you want to see happy po folk put my zip in that zipskinny site - 30457.
Median income around 25k but they are happy. Heck, most folks around here could not even tell Wall Street Fell.

One big difference between her and I - If I sell my opulent house (lol) and move away, my nanny (dont have one), groundspeople (dont any of those either) and waitstaff (sorry Jeeves...) don't get the shaft.

When I actually hear a $300k/yr person *****ing, I'll let them know their place, until then, I'd rather her slave-nanny have a job at $40k than be on the street hooking for crack.

No sympathy here. It is eminently feasible (to borrow a lyric from Tony Rebel) to live within a 300K budget. I'd feel sorry for them, but the nanny, gardener, and pool boy would be gone. Hello day care and chores for the kids. My buddy sends his kid to day care and he makes maybe a 6th of that if he's lucky.

The title is kind of misleading. I didn't see her complaining, in fact she's fighting to get through it. Selling my house would be an absolute last resort after expending every other option, good economy or bad. I'll never begrudge those with higher lifestyles, most of them have earned it. I may not have sympathy for the Hamptons-types but I don't wish them ill. There are a lot of people counting on them for jobs.

Hopefully they all had their gardeners plant a Recession Garden!

I'm not rich....I got like $10 on occasion for mowing a 1/4 acre with a push mower......took about 2.5 hours. That's a pretty low wage. And, sometimes I did not get paid....but I did it all the same.

I made money by mowing about 6 people's lawns down my street. (lots of old people on my street when I was a kid ) If I was lucky I could haul in maybe $40-50 in a good week....and in the winter, profits went down....some snow clearing, but less than mowing. After paying for mower repairs and gas....etc...I'd make maybe $35 a week tops....that's not much. Nowadays that means it would have taken me a good 3-4 months of hard labor to save for a Playstation 3....

I quickly skimmed the article. She isn't taking many steps to control expenses. How many noticed she still has two cars - a Volvo SUV and a Solstice convertible? Getting rid of the toy car is pretty low hanging fruit in terms of cutting expenses.

Pulling income and/or principle from an investment portfolio at her age is a losers game. She's trading a higher lifestyle now for a much lower lifestyle later, when she is no longer able to command a high salary, or any salary, and becomes dependent upon income from the portfolio for all living expenses.

A wise friend of mine has a saying - "Luxury, once tasted, becomes necessity." Appears to be quite true in this story.

Maybe she's independently wealthy. Banging her Net Worth to the tune of 50 grand a year isn't normally a smart strategy. But, maybe her daddy banker is well off and she's an only child, standing in line to inherit a few million. Who knows? (Only her and her accountant. and maybe the divorce judge).

Lunch party with lobster bisque or basement flooded with sewage. Now WHICH one would I prefer to be around? Hmmm, let me think.

No sympathy here. I'm getting by on less than 1/10th her salary (and less than her nanny!) and no problems here. Granted no kids, but I've still got some in the coffers for those fun nights out...or random parts that go on the MB. I can't even imagine what I would do with that much money, kids or not.

Where I come from an Iron Maiden isn't made out of spinach and carrot juice. I'll just bet Laurie's ex-husband is rolling on the floor laughing his biscuits off. She might consider alittle bartering(sp) with the pool boy and gardener.

Yeah, who knows. The tone of the article made it sound as if she was more worried about money than that, but how much of that is the subject and how much was injected by the author. I've seen quite a lot of the same behavior, albeit on a smaller scale, during the current economic downturn. Most folks are unwilling to give up the lifestyle to which they've become accustomed until the money is gone...
