who got the best deal on their diesel MB under $1000?
ok, i searched and didn't see a thread like this. hopefully this will give future budget benz owners an idea of what they should pay and what they can expect out of their MB. not to mention let us brag about how little we paid for these great cars.
basicly just post how much you paid when you bought it mileage then and now what you did and spent to get it road worthy and general idea of what you have into it. oh and post a pic if you have one, lets see who got the best deal on their car 83 300sd $550 8/7/09 223k 8/19/09 224k new brake line, fuel filter and oil $35 so far including tags and new nozzles (that i didn't need) i have under $800 into the car and she drives like a dream.

i paid $700 for my 77 and I couldnt be more pleased with it. I had to replace the tires, some of the brake components since it sat for 2 years. Some of the brake hoses rotted out, one of the front calipers froze that was replaced, carpetting was used for mouse nests. The body is very good for new england area, engine and tranny still good, paint is good still. Not too much money in it.

I don't think I have ever bought one for less than a grand unless it was for parts or an organ donor or a repairable wreck.

I just bought an '83 300SD with 535xxx KM's/332xxx miles two days ago. Gold exterior, motor runs well with little blow by. Plenty of power. Transmission shifts nicely, fluid smells and looks decent. It sat for a while under a cover, and I think the PO might have been the original owner (I didn't ask specifically). Just washed the engine today. I'll find out if any of the messy areas have any actual leaks. Needs new belts and possibly some injection work, since it doesn't like to stay running when it's right cold. Not perfect, some little rust spots, but she's an old beaut, and for $900 you can't go wrong!
It's replacing an '88 Corolla wagon that I got a $1000 insurance payout on after I got t-boned and it was totaled three weeks ago. Not too shabby! |

I paid $100 for my TD almost 3 years ago and have done nothing to it but change the fluids and drive it. It'll need brakes soon and it needs a couple glowplugs. There are a few rust issues that need to be addressed in the near future but it's by no means a rust bucket. I've only put a few thousand miles on it so far since it's a play car, currently just shy of 107,000.

Around here the prices are massively inflated, and most have rust, so there's not much to pick from. Have to travel the country to find a nice one. The cheapest we have bought was my dad's mint SD for $750, but it needed a motor swap and some trans servicing, so it ended up being around 2,500 all said and done. Still 1/2 what one in that shape is worth though. My brother's 300D was $1500, but its not perfect....but has been a reliable daily driver for him/my dad for years now.... My '82 300SD: Paid: $3700 Bought: 7/29/2003 Mileage then: 207,128 Mileage now: 282,300+ Nothing was needed to get it roadworthy....drove it 800 miles home just fine. Into it since purchase... ....probably 10-11k by now. Don't want to think about it.... My 1990 300E: Paid: $3250 Bought: 11/23/2008 Mileage then: 133,100ish Mileage now: 141,690 or so Nothing needed to get roadworthy, but I did a lot of "standard maintenance" right away....all fluids...filters....a few sensors, hoses, and idle valve....etc... Into it since then....a little less than 2k....including a new set of tires, valve stem seal replacement, rear shocks....wires....plugs....etc. Gassers are needy. It has no rust though, well worth it. And it runs perfect now and everything works....it should be with us for a loooong while. I've taken it on a few 300+ and 400+ mile trips no problem. Compared to a new car....the cost is minimal....only $500 a year to insure it too.

Bought my 1984 300td for $50. Original California car with a great body and paint. The interior was filthy from sitting for a few years but cleaned up real nice. Even had the original roof rack crossbars and the pull out cargo cover. The owner said the motor was bad but it turned out to just be the crank balancer pins were broken!! I fixed that and my wife has been driving it everyday for over 2 years. I love that car!

Does it qualify if I got my car for free from my grandmother?

'77 240D for $480 with 218k. Now at 231k. Along the way I've had to put in a slave cylinder, a windshield, two starters (got my money back on the first one), a voltage regulator, one brake rotor, one hood star (very important) and some tires and batteries.
'83 300D was $800 with 293k. Now at 309k. I rebuilt the rear brakes, had the front end rebuilt, and had to replace a windshield Now it needs the tranny resealed. I don't want to get into what a money pit the gasser is.

That mostly depends on which gasser it is. Certain motors (M110, M103, M104) are going to be cheaper to run than their V8 or huge complicated brothers...
I'd like to have an SL someday, and I don't even think I would go for a V8 model, I'm going to try and find a M103 or M110 euro powered one. Overall my current M103 gasser has not really been any less reliable or any more needy than the diesels....and it has its advantages in certain areas too....oil changes are a bit cheaper...some stuff is easier to work on/access....and its just about equally long lived.

Bought a '71 220 in 1994 for $500. The car is long gone but the M115 engine/transmission is on it's 4th body ('71, '69, '68 and now a '72, all W114/115's) and running strong. Doesn't really count since it's not a diesel.
Bought a '73 220D in 1994 also. Paid $175 and had to put $5 in diesel and a new battery in it. Spent $10 at the car wash spraying the bird crap off it (no kidding, it had been stored in a barn with nesting hens), drove it for 8 years, gave it to my son who drove it HARD for two years and finally sold it for $2500 to a woman who speed parked a Toyota in the trunk! Damn, I miss that old beast! |
