If I earned that kind of money, I could also find a way to spend more/ want more.

Her "base" salary is over twice that of my wife and mine combined. She can continue to "squeak by" in my opinion.

She can start by replacing Harrisons X-Box controler with a lawnmower handle and hedge trimmers.

There's 6k.

I have sympathy for her. Divorced, doing all the hard work with the kids, living in a house she can barely afford but cannot sell. The health care plan would skin her some more, but she doesn't have to worry about that until 2013, right?

I'm not being sarcastic. She's pretty much stuck. Sounds like the kids are snots too. She needs to do something, like WVO's suggestion, to correct that.

I can understand how you can get yourself to the point she's at, but the smart person swallows their pride and makes "life adjustments" when the money gets weaker. In other words, she's an idiot who doesn't want to give up her precious lifestyle. No sympathy.

She could start with moving to a better city; that'd save her a pile in rent/taxes, school bills, and a nanny.

If she's upside down on her mortgage, she can't move and make life adjustments. I'm not sure if that's the case or not, but its likely.

Maybe so, regarding the house/move.

But, we both/all know that there’s plenty there for her to make some (and some what simple) life adjustments with.

I saw no mention of any mortgage.

People who live that lavishly to begin with, receive no sympathy. Just look at the contrast between her and the nanny, one is "struggling" because she only has 300k a year to live on, while the other does not even have her 40k a year job any more, and doesn't even have health insurance.

People like this live in their Gatsby-like worlds, thinking everything will always be perfect, and they've never had to live with "less". So when it all goes tumbling down, they end up in despair. These kind of people spend more on "grounds and estate maintenance" than many people have for a yearly salary period.

Even worse is where a large number of these individuals make their money. Shady bankers/stocks/investment/financial workers that are involved in illegal and ethically questionable practices....even the woman in that article, vice president at Mastercard? So essentially her salary comes from debt-strapped people who have large credit card bills and pay huge amounts of interest every month.

Her kids are going to end up the same spoiled "I deserve even better than I grew up with" type people. *shudder*

Yes, but that would really hurt her social standing. Imagine having to down grade to a lowly 1 million dollar home on 1 acre. Oh the horrors of it all.

But that would put her even farther away from the house by the ocean she so desperately would like to get back to.
