Opinions please about District 9 the movie

I heard Howard Stern say he loved it. I haven't seen it. I've quit going to movie theaters. They have become so rediculously over priced. I'll wait til the DVD comes out.

Saw it last weekend. I liked it. Especially the last half. Good action. Good story. Some people may not like the style it is in. Like a documentary in the first half of the movie. Definatly different from any other movie I've seen. Low budget but good special effects. Not so much CG effects like a lot of movies these days. 7/10 for me.

$30million Low budget, I guess it is? I liked the film, even that there are aliens in it the story is very believable. Thought they did a great job, very entertaining.

I've seen the previews and stuff on line and a couple of interviews with the director etc. I won't be seeing it. It's a South African New Zealand, co-production that materialised after Sony pulled the plug on "Halo" that this group had been working on. Making films in SA automatically means low budget, hence the "documentary" feel of the first half. Not necessarily a bad thing but in my opinion just makes it seem contrived.

It was actually a pretty good movie. The documentary part of the movie was way too long but after it got started it was quite good. The aliens were well done even if they did steal the faces from Arnold's old Predator movie. The main character was appropriately pretty wimpy as the movie started and I enjoyed watching him develop.

This movie had something of a "Save the Whales" or "Global Warming" or treehugger mentality as they wallowed the aliens around in racist mistreatment from the Jo'berg citizens and I was afraid it would soon deteriorate into a vehicle for Greenpeace. But I was surprised. They picked up the storyline, created some sympthy for the aliens themselves as individuals with individual feelings, hopes, and aspirations (and family), examined whether or not we might be able all to live together, and set us up for movie number two.

The pace of the movie was intense. There was hardly a break the whole two hours as it moved forward at a breath taking speed; do not plan on taking a bathroom break during the movie - you will miss too much.

Go see it; but do not judge it too much until the documentary part is over.

I had also read that the producer lived in Johannesburg, SA, so he had firsthand experience of the apartheid conditions there, hence the movie's premise.

If you didn't know this going into the theater, you may have been disappointed that this wasn't another "Transformers"...

...I did laugh once when the guy in the robotic unit grabs a pig a forcefully chunks it at one of the soldiers!

mm.. pork chunks.

Kinda like that scene in Saving Private Ryan when the two soldiers ran out of ammo and threw their helmets at each other :D

I loved it, my wife slept through it. Either you like it or you don't I guess.

Now comparing this and Cloverfield which has a similar style, I would go for this one rather than Cloverfield. The other alien movie was harder to visualize because it made the audience dizzy more than District 9.
