router must die

Seriously, my brand new router is giving me issues.. Slow connection, dropping me, screwing up.. Generally not working. I just got it, what last month. It hs been working just fine up until now. I cant even connect to it, and when I do its incredibly slow and fails. Every setting has not been touched since I set it up..

Right now I am running a cat5 cable to my laptop through the router.. something in the wireless spectrum is effed up..

either my stupid piece of **** router or this equally ****ty Dell

So your issues are wireless probably. Do you live in a place where everyone on the block has a wireless router beaming signals everywhere? If so, switch the channel on your router's wireless to a different channel (one other than 1, 6, or 11) as those are the most common and everyone else will be on those channels, causing signal overlap and interference. It might help, if that is the issue.

I doubt your issues are with the vista wireless controls....in my experience vista does not usually have any driver issues, especially on a PC it came installed upon.

What type of router did you get? In my opinion the "home level" ones are pretty much all junk....I stick with "Small business" or "business" class equipment. Also, if you don't need wireless, don't use it. I use a wired Netgear Firewall, and haven't had a connection issue...ever. The thing has been powered up without being touched since late May when I moved here and powered it on.

Only the higher quality wireless products work very well. Netgear does offer a wireless capable version of my unit.......though I've never used one.

Use quality stuff. You wouldn't drive a kia would you? Why not have the MB (or at least the VW) of the router/firewall world.

I like wireless since the laptop gets moved about the house. I have encryption on my network and I get at least 5-6 networks showing up in my wireless control thing.

Have never had an issue up until now.

My first Linksys router lasted only about six months before it started dropping the internet. I replaced it and have had no problem for over a year now. Maybe your router is just not working.

5-6 Networks???

That's your problem right there! I always change the channel to 11 when I set up any wireless router. Make sure you also update the routers firmware.

If you change the default country in some routers you can unlock channels 12-14. Sure the FCC could in theory yell at you, but what is the chance of that happening?

Router Must Die!

We have the same problem when we are in the RV. 20 routers within a few hundred feet. Switching to a different channel made the difference.
