HA! Part of the reason for the Rover is to have a reasonable tow vehicle. Also it would have to be a 4 wheel dolly (Permanent four wheel drive cars can't be two wheel towed.
My comments were really more directed towards those offering fraud advise, ala theDon.

Point of inquiry--why don't you drive the vehicle home, or are you buying a non-runner to make into yard art?

Works perfectly; but how do you drive an unregistered an uninsured car home I'd rather have it towed then risk getting pulled over.


This is the first time i've bought a car from a private party so i'm trying to see what my options are. Is there a process for temporary registration at the DMV? Or can I register it even though its on the current owners property?

I've owned a couple of Range Rovers--paid for both of them twice in repairs, but I looked cool. Currently, the extended warranty for a 2006 LR3 sold through the dealer at Land Rover of New Orleans was three times what the comparable extended warranty was for an '06 Volvo XC90R with less miles. The LR3 was also cheaper than the Volvo. There was even a $50 deductable for each visit. Hmmmm. I asked, well, the owner, of the dealer candidly what was the deal. He pointed to a 2000 disco on the rack and said, see that? The shocks for that vehicle cost me $2200.00, just for the parts.

Sounds like you got your mind made up, so a sincere good luck and I hope you don't have any problems with it.

I assumed you knew how to drive....

If you have liability coverage on your other car, check out your policy. My policies offer coverage under your scenario. Also, I can bind coverage in a matter of 30 seconds over the phone, and do it all the time.

If you have a dated bill of sale, I bet you $10 a cop would not give you a
ticket if you were driving the car to take it to get it registered, by which I assume you mean getting plates for it.

Try putting the SDL plates on it, get caught and see what happens vs. driving unregistered.

you can call your insurance co and they will insure it over the phone with the VIN. any state will give you a temp tag to move the vehicle good for 30 days when you register/transfer it, you just sign the waiver saying it is insured

Tell him that he got ripped off.....thoroughly ripped off too. I just checked two of the best known LR parts supplies and shocks are about $80 for bilsten shocks. .....no different then parts for a Mercedes.


Even if it was a Range Rover and he had to replace all the air springs he still got ripped off......

If it's essentially road-ready just go to the DMV with the title, bill of sale and insurance card and they'll either give you a temporary plate (I believe it's a 10-day plate which allows you to drive it to get it road-ready and to the inspection station) or issue you a plate on the spot if the vehicle is currently registered in CT (to the PO). With budget contraints more likely the latter. They issued a plate immediately for my TD without ever setting eyes on it because it had a current registration. And you've seen it first-hand.

I'll defer. You going to tell a guy with the last name of Paretti that has a boat that costs more than a beach house in Stonington he got ripped off?

Sounds like you've done your homework. To be fair, my friend's never left him stranded. Without brakes, yes, with a cracked exhaust manifold, sure, with all manner of electrical gremlins, you bet, but never "stranded," strictly speaking. He got fed up with it (which is saying a lot, as he's monkeyed around with MG's, Jags, and Triumphs for years) and sold it at a significant loss, in the end.

Hope it turns out to be a good truck for you, anyway. They are neat, and can be had for next to nothing, so I guess it can't hurt to give one a shot!

My next door neighbor has Defender 90s as daily drivers (two, an '09HSE, an '08 LR2, a Lexus G470, and my old Porsche--GI docs do well here). They apparently don't break, and his teenage son rags the heck out of the older one (which may be a '95??). I love them, but it would fall into the 'what are you going to get rid of first' category, because my wife would not ride in it and I could only carry two of my three girls in it during the summer at their current ages. I haven't researched it much, but I think he said something like $35K for the older of the two, if he were to part with it.

When Obama busts up tort deform, I might treat myself to one in a year or two
