I'd love to get my hands on a Defender. Of course in my case it would take A) the old man retiring, B) the Mrs. to start working again and C)1-4 kids getting through post-secondary school. I'm probably looking at 15-20 years maybe?

CT Temporary Registration!

http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=810&Q=245092&dmvPNavCtr=|27892|#27895

"Requirements for Obtaining a Temporary Registration

A temporary registration may be obtained at any DMV full service branch or satellite office for the purpose of needing a safety inspection and/or emissions test. Please see Safety Inspections Performed at DMV for additional inspection information.

To obtain a temporary registration, you will need to provide the following information:

If currently titled, the Title Certificate of the former owner which must show assignment of ownership.
Bill of Sale (form H-31).
Application for Registration and Certificate of Title (form H-13).
Your current Connecticut Insurance Identification Card, which can be obtained from your insurance company. The insurance card must be in the name of the registered owner(s) of the vehicle. If vehicle is being leased, the insurance card may be in the name of the lessee.
Identification will be required to register a vehicle. Please see list of Acceptable Forms of Identification.

You should go through the safety inspection and/or emissions test within the first ten (10) days, in case repairs are required, as temporary registrations are not renewable.
You will have to pay sales tax at the time you purchase the temporary registration unless you meet the sales tax exemption qualification. Connecticut sales tax rate is 6%.

A vehicle exempt from sales tax by a family or business relationship cannot be registered if the transferor (seller) owes delinquent property taxes on the vehicle, in which case a tax receipt would have to be shown, or if the vehicle is listed as suspended, or has parking violations. The same applies for the person registering the vehicle.

Note: Vehicles cannot be registered if delinquent property tax or parking tickets are owed or if the registrant has had his/her registration privilege suspended.

The following is a list of temporary registrations by type, duration, and fee:

Motorcycle 10 day $20
Camp Trailer 10 day $7
Camper 10 day $11
Passenger 10 day $20
Commercial 10 day $25 (if 6000 lbs. or less Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)
Commercial 10 day $46 (if more than 6000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)"

Thanks Bob. I saw that earlier too and I think i'm going to do it that way. It just sucks because now I have to make an extra trip. Oh well, if you want to do things property it will take time.

I do have to admit that another buddy out in AZ has a couple Defenders and swears by them. I always sort of discounted his experience with them as he's got family money out the wazoo and just pays someone to fix anything and everything. That and he's got two or three of them at any given time, so if one is in the shop, no big deal... jump in rig #2 or 3.

Last I talked to him a couple of years ago he was looking into having a diesel swap shipped over from the UK, or maybe looking into a 617 swap. That might be kind of neat!

As an aside, if I have $10k handy, I'd be sorely tempted by this:

I was thinking about a 617 swap earlier today actually. I know that someone inquired a few months back about pulling the same trick on a Range Rover Classic....I'm going to be following that project closely because it doesn't sound unreasonable. Of course I will only approach that project if the engine/transmission in this one completely blows.

Just keep in mind CT is a PITA when it comes to engine swaps for on-road use. The Cliff Notes version is that the engine needs to be body year or newer.

Where is the Disco located?

Pay them, they sign the title over to you, and you take it up to the DMV, and get plates. Also call your insurance company and have them fax over a temp insurance card for it before you go.

When did you want to move it? I could probably slip out of work for a bit if you needed a ride down. It's easier for me to get away from work than the family.

Go ahead, look up the shocks yourself and tell me that he didn't overpay. I'll even call a few dealers later to see what they charge as well.
Its an absolute miracle got duped if you are willing to waste such effort for so little reward Apparently you don't understand Southern vernacular. When the multi millionaire owner of the largest Land Rover Dealership in the South East has a car up on the rack and points at it and says he has $2K in shocks going into the job, and that's why you can't give away used ones, I don't think he meant to indicate and I to accept that all that was involved in the parts order was four Bilstein shocks when he made the comment. Maybe read some Faulkner or Walker Percy in your spare time and get a little cultural expansion going on.

Either way, I made more than the thing is worth while you were dicking around on here today.

PS: I had about $4K in the transmission of the County I had. Mom and Dad let me slide on the rent for a few weeks, so it turned out ok though

Could have been worse...my parents talked about the old 109s rolling into town with fully armed (M1 Garands) police pouring out of the back.......

Damn! I never saw anything like that down there, but heard about a similar incident from one of the mates on the boat that went into the wrong part of a barrio to score some blow. Cured him for about a day (well, it was either the police or the ingestion of his prior stash when we got boarded the day before on a safety shakedown). What marina were they fishing out of? Unless you are out in a skiing or other isolated sporting property in that part of the world, it really makes sense to spend the $25 and have a trusted local act as an escort.
