Call from a head hunter
I got a call from a head hunter today, while I was in a meeting so he left a voice msg.
Very vague--references to a job that came across his desk and might suit me. Good money, reporting to principles only, chance to grow, etc. Sounds like a prospecting call to me. Although there is a chance he might get my name thru word-of-mouth. I have a good reputation in my field. Should I call back?

I get those from time-to-time. Glamorous job opportunities in Buffalo, Erie and Detroit.
I'd rather develop a rash... |

A couple of times I got those and was suspicious and didn't call back. Then later found out they were legitimate!
Call him back and ask how he heard about you. Ask some questions. You should figure out pretty quick if it is BS. The only question they might not answer initially is the name of the company they are recruiting for. But they should be able to answer any other question.

If you're a professional, it could likely be legit. I get letters from them all the time trying to place legal staff and attorneys. They are starving along with all those out of a job, so he may be fishing to place you a little, but I don't see what a call back would harm. |

If they want ANY money or other consideration from you, walk away. That's the first test.
Also, do not blindly give headhunters permission to spread your resume and name to other businesses. Force them to gain your trust first. You certainly don't want every headhunter in town spreading your name around. |

I generally do call back, if for no other reason than professional courtesy.
The day may come when these established contacts prove useful.

That's my thinking, too. I'm a salesman and it always impresses me favorably when people return my calls. I'm never too busy to consider possible alternatives to what I am doing at any given time.

Yes, call him back. Happened to me; job was in Minot, ND. Pretty far from Atlanta in more ways than one. I turned him down.

My wife gets those all the time. They're mostly legit, and they're also fishing for names and phone numbers. They'll talk a bit and sooner or later get something from you.

The most successful corporate man I know (CFO of Whirlpool) says to be always looking doe your next job. Headhunters often end up as recruiters for companies so be nice, its not that hard to have them send you information.
