Living without television

I relocated to a remote area the first of June and have not had television since that time. This weekend the wife rented some movies and brought a dvd player and we watched a couple movies. The whole time we watched the movies I felt like I was sitting there wasting my time. This was the first tv I had watched since moving. Personally I really don't want tv but she said something about watching Ga football. I suggested we purchase a dvd showing "The best of Ga Football", put it on and listen to the live game on the radio. Ya'll think she will be able to tell a difference? I won't be able to.

I keep up with the news on the net. Is something wrong with me? Anybody else out there without a tv? There is so much stuff to do around here.

Haven't bothered with TV for over 2 years now... none of us miss it (wife, 14 yo daughter, 2 yo son and me). Like you said, we pretty much keep up with news on the radio or internet. We watch an occasional movie on the laptop but that is pretty much it. No time for it, better things to do!!

I totally despise it and never watch it, and basically never watched it, especially that cursed American commercial Television full of people laughing at things that are not funny, with the commercials played LOUDER than the programming to get you to watch it, and ads showing people holding up cans of motor oil and toilet paper to their smiling faces.

I did not know who "Charley's Angels" are and what they did...

I never thought this would happen but one big reason I broke up with a g/f in So Cal this year was that she ADORES American commercial television, and "Entertainment tonight", celebrity gossip, and horrible sit coms always were on when I came there, and when I bemoaned it she just turned up the remote control to play it louder. It was sheer torture.

I've only begun watching it again recently since I got Fios. I like History, Nat Geo, and the home improvement stuff. Before that I barely watched TV for years. Yes, it seemed like a waste of time to me, too, Jim.

Hey! Join the club

I stopped watching TV almost two years ago. I find it funny that my degree is in television and radio sound production, but I'm moving into cinema since I know movies aren't going away any time soon!

Personally all you need is a computer hooked up to a TV. Doing so isn't difficult. When I find myself back home in North East I hook my macbook pro up to my parents television and surround sound system for some commercial free TV.

There are bunch of great websites that offer free or limited commercial breaks. Here are a bunch:

www.hulu.com

www.fox.com (for me it's 24. I love Jack Bauer)

www.surfthechannel.com

I will never waste money on cable ever again. If an online TV system came out I would gladly pay cash for it if it was a la carte. I would consider cable or satellite again if A la carte came to be. Until then I have the internet.

You do have high speed internet right? I find that more of a necessity then TV.

I've always wondered why the cable or satellite providers didn't offer ala carte channels. instead, they make one purchase the next higher "tier" of you want to purchase a particular channel. so, you end up paying for all of the additional channels, and, why pay for something that you aren't going to watch?

TV whats that? I do miss the History channel a bit, but not enough to spend the money on cable. I'm to busy with other stuff.

I have not had Tv for the last 9 years, and before that I only had what the rabbit ears would pick up. I don't miss it at all. there are so many better things to do-play a game ,read a book, talk to your family, etc. I refuse to pay for television. If I remember correctly the airwaves belonged to the public. My children think they are abused because we don't have TV, but I think they will thank me when they get older. It would actually be easier to have TV because you can just hook the kids up to the electronic babysitter and do what you want to do, but IMO it's not the right thing to do.

I got cable as soon as I came to this country nine years ago now. Because I had been stuck with three channels of utter crap back home and I really wanted stuff like History Channel, Nat Geo, Discovery etc. Remember this was all pre high speed internet. However we hardly ever watch it. I don't think it's even been turned on in the last couple of months except perhaps once for the kids to watch Clone Wars on cartoon network. I agree it's irrelivent to news and most entertainment which I get from the net now. I'm continuously meaning to dump cable and simply get everything thru the internet.

TV bores me to tears, and movies aren't much better...I can sit still for about 15 minutes, then I wander off and do dishes or laundry, anything but sit in front of the box.

I had it for 6 months with a comcast promotion, then I dumped it (and their internet service), and went with local DSL only. No TV service....I even have a DTV coupon for a converter box, but have found no need to even buy one. I watch a few shows online, but pretty much no live TV at all, I don't have it in my home...haven't since March, don't miss it at all. (and especially don't miss paying $65 a month to evil comcrap)
