Causeway is fun, but boring. HPL is a thrill a minute and thankfully shorter than the causeway....be prepared when asking directions in NOLA that east west & north south dont usually apply. You will get a lot of riverside & lakeside: bring a GPS.

Yes, and write down where you parked your car and put it in a safe place, which is not your wallet! I've lost my car way too many times in NOLA.

I had to read that one a couple of times before it clicked. I was thinking, "Now how the boogity does he get his car in his wallet? Did Medmech go out and get a Smart car and an over sized wallet or what? I guess it'd be handy to keep change in but I bet it's uncomfortable to sit on. OHHHH, leave the NOTE in your wallet!"

I suppose it'd be best not to write the note on a single else that there scantily dressed girl at the ,ahem, "dance club" would get it.

Yes, you can easily lose your wallet its best to write it down on a body part with little or no market value....keep it away from valuable organs anything goes in NOLA.

What about Lafayette?

How is Louisiana in general? Places I should avoid/be cautious in? (besides drivers)
Baton Rouge is one of the most violent cities in the United States. It has one of the highest murder rates in the country. It is sad to have to make a commentary that might sound racist, but the blunt truth is black people in Baton Rouge are in the process of slaughtering each other by the truckload for God knows what reason. New Orleans is not much different. That being said, it is also an historic town with lots of things to see in the way of neat old buildings and such.

Lafayette is a nice town. Real "Middle America", nice people, nice hotels.

Louisiana in general is an odd place, you will find the nicest people you ever met, and if you are unlucky, the worst people you ever met. In general, whenever I visit LA, I take a gun. My favorite area is the Lake Charles area, the casinos are fun, the Cajun resturants are in general, fabulous, and the people are friendly and don't hate Yankees anywhere near as much as those in the northern and eastern part of the state do, either that they just don't do it so publically. You can get a hell of a deal on a nice hotel room at the Delta Downs racetrack, in a beautiful country setting with lots to do besides gamble, and the casinos around Lake Charles itself are a lot of fun.

Feel free to drop me a PM if you're in Houston.

That really sucks, I know many places have their "bad parts" but of course the state I'd like to visit has one of the highest crime rates in the country... go figure. Louisiana just seems cool... from the French quarters... to cajun country to everything that's all jumbled in the state, it's a real shame people can't get along.

I guess if I go I might just end up going to Lafayette, it's closer anyways. My friend Brianna who lives in Austin said that crime got real bad in Houston after Katrina cause of all the refugees from Louisiana, and that's some BS cause it's gets personal once it involves Texas

That part of the country really draws me in, California doesn't do much for me, I don't like the people here, it's very expensive and we don't get awesome weather like you do out there.. It's perdyful and all but not for me. Texas just has so much and the people are amazing and it's inexpensive!!! It's annoying too because when I was abroad and talked to people and mentioned "California" the first thing they say is "OMG YOU LIVE IN CALIFORNIA?? DO YOU SEE ANY MOVIE STARS? I WANT TO GO SO BAD" but if I mention Texas the reaction I get is "Texas? what's in Texas?"

To many Californian's there is nothing out there but California, every other state for some reason has "nothing" in it... It'll be one of the coolest/happiest days when I trade in my California license for a Texas one

Thanks JollyRodger, when I get to Houston i'll PM you!

JR a yankee !!!! Who'da ever thought?

To the OP, try to catch an LSU game in BR and you will have a good time. What JR says about crime is true, I once lived there, but you don't need to carry a gun unless you are very wimpy looking and an easy target. I never had a problem.

If you are between Lake Charles and Lafayette on Saturday morning you can go to Fred's in Mamou, get drunk and enjoy the music...

Several years ago I worked at a radio station in New Orleans. My Jaguar was acting up so I dropped it off at a nearby shop. Went back to get it the next weekend and the shop was boarded up and all the cars gone. The police said it was happening all over the city. These guys were "sqatting" at abandoned gas stations and when they had enough cars, they moved on. Never saw that car again.

Spend a day and night in BR. Drive down to NOLA for a day and a night. See the French Qt., Jackson Sq.. and the Garden District. Stay out of the 9th ward and the Industrial Canal area. Go west on OLD Hy. 90, the new Hy. 90 bypasses the neat old towns, to Houma, Franklin, Oak Alley, and up to Lafayette.

Left on IS 10 will take you to Houston and 300 of the most boring miles in the USA. I used to live in Jennings and have driven it about 75 times. Right will take you back to BR over the Achafalya river bridge and another 50 miles of very boring driving.

That sounds like a plan, thanks... I can't wait to get out there!

pfft you mean there is actually a drive more painful than the 500 mile, 7 hour ride from El Paso to San Antonio? It has the same scenery for that entire ride pretty much and it just drags on forever!!!
