It is beneficial for batteries. My friends with batteries in the trunk have had to buy far fewer batteries than I have. My 6.9 gets really hot under the hood. Look at the insulated wall MB starting adding in the 80's for the battery and electrical components.

You might be onto something in regards to batteries. I noticed on the newer MB's they last a long, long time. I think the one in my friends E300D is near 10 years old and its finaly starting to give up.

I do it at the autocross on a hot day and on the highway on hot days when I am travleing....especially if I am towing a trailer.
