Interesting, I remember when I was a kid one of the guys that worked for my uncle got his old D8 stuck in a muddy hell hole. What are swamp pads little extenders to spread the weight?

I have seen equipment sink on the beach and get burried by the tide.

Interesting.....are you planning an expedition?

Unfortunately "Amphibious Mode" was a luxury option for that vehicle.

The width of the tread plates is increased on models, "LGP" (I think). LGP stands for Low Ground Pressure. Like R Leo posted above, I have worked with dozers making a path thru a swamp where the only thing holding us up was the mashed-down swamp grasses. Step of that and you sink. The dozer with the wide treads just spreads the load out over a larger area.

Very interesting....I'd hold off for a Unimog or a Zetros but do like the fact that its a multi-fuel capable engine.

From your link:

Yakutsk can only be reached by ferry in the summer. The road dead ends on the wrong side of Yakutsk. In fact, there is no bridge anywhere in the Sakha Republic that even crosses the mighty Lena.

But just because it is a very bad idea to drive doesn't mean people don't try anyway. After all, most people in this area are dirt poor. Unless they own a plane or a boat, the Road of Mud is the only way in and out of the city.

These poor people were born to suffer.

Yeah I thought that was a bit harsh. Truth be told the road is fine for most of the year. Its only when the spring and summer thaw/rains hit that it becomes a car swallowing swamp. Still though....I wouldn't mind doing a 4x4 expedition to the area one day. Shoot you could even run a vehicle recovery/delivery business if you had the right equipment.
