Studs Terkel

Not being the most literate person in the world, I've never read any of Studs Terkel's books. I enjoy books based on oral histories and I hear that he was the master of the oral history.

Which was his best book?

"Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression" is his best in my opinion, but i haven't read all of them. "The Good War: An Oral History of World War Two" is also excellent.

depends on what you're into really. war, jazz, general working people's history and lives? he's an interesting writer on his own and can entertain no matter what he writes about. i never read "Giants of Jazz" though, because i don't like the music....you pick, i'm sure they're all good.

I have read hard times three times, The good war once. Nothing else he has written but keep my eyes open. Studs also won a major award for hard times. I would read any of his publications.

Just last night finished rivethead an autobiographal account of a production worker for general motors. Unusual insites from an intelligent indiviual trapped into an assembly line life. Complex guy that helps me to understand a little why the big three are as they are.

The personal cost of an intellegent mind and the usual repedative work that go along with a line job eventually was insanity. He did not last till pension time before exploding.

I enjoyed Rivethead too. Another good book on industrial work.

If you like oral histories, I highly recommend Bloods by Wallace Terry. Vietnam era oral history.
