The problem that we have today, is that everybody wants it "cheaper" and unfortunately, americans are following suit. Some of the worst furniture I have ever seen is made in the usa!!

All we are doing is sending our money to china, and in return, china sends us their garbage that we so desire!

People need to get the "disposable society" crap out of their mind.. Buy something good, and keep it for 10+ years... I get sick to my stomach every time people buy a new couch every 2 years....

Home Depot recently took a survey that asked people if it made a difference in their purchasing decision whether a tool was made in China or not. the majority of people simply don't care if a tool is made on Mars as long as it does what they want it to do. we have subsidized our own demise.....
That is only one end of the equation. Will the rest of the world also impose tariffs? Remember, you are not the only game in town. Granted you are a big player but you are still not the "be all and end all".

In that aspect, you are right. We should have made it a "tit for tat".

We are talking about people here not computers. People will say much but when it comes down to it, look out for their own hind end.

Problem is that it is a disposable world out there. Because of the knowledge explosion, you have things changing at a breakneck pace. As such, it is hard to tell someone that they should keep things around for a long time. So why would someone pay more for something that they plan to dump in 2 yrs?

I'm still looking. There's got to be something here...

Edit: Hey, I found a couple things: my Levinger Pocket Briefcase (I can't speak for their other models though) and New England Rake's landscape and screeding rakes (West Haven, CT).

Harley Davidson...........
.......models, that is, made by the Franklin Mint.

I own six of them, including Capt. America and the Billy Bike ffrom EZ Rider.
http://www.franklinmint.com/aboutus.aspx

Excellent work.

Lots of sub-assemblies and parts of the real Hogs are made abroad...China, etc. Cheaper.

I guess we are taking a really odd path in our house. Yes we buy a lot of foreign made things. New TV and Harbor Freight tools plus whatever we pick up at Chinatown... er Walmart (wonder if Van Luenen still holds the rights to the store name "Chinatown" - that's what they used to call their stores). Car parts come from where ever MB makes them. I am just about to the point of only buying parts for my MB from them since I want my stuff to last (and I do the work and I'm too lazy to want to do it again).
For a lot of stuff though, we buy stuff that was probably made in the USA... a long time ago. A few years back I just got fed up with "Sauder" style furniture. Stuff made from sawdust with wallpaper glued over it. All of the furniture in use in our bedroom was made before 1940. Most pieces before 1900. We are looking at a sofa and chair that is pre 1900. May have to have it redone (hate to think where the materials will be from), but it looks sturdy and will fit in nicely. That's the thing, this stuff held up for 100 years, with care it should last awgile longer. Our house is antique, I am antique, now the furnishings I'm buying are antique. Wife of course is still young and lovely (how stupid you think I am?).
I still get a chuckle when I hear people moaning about their job just went to anywhere besides here. Cincinnati used to have a big RCA operation here. Made a bunch of stuff. Then people started buying TVs and such made in Timbuktu or such. Whole family out of work - sorta like Detroit I guess. When folks were worrying about their job andd talking about foreign made stuff, I would ask them where their TV was made. Sure bet it wasn't Cincy anymore.

Maybe people should be a little more careful about what they buy.. I am 27 years old, I live in a 100 year old house, and 90% of my stuff is pre-1950. I have a herman miller sofa from the 60's and a new tv/ playstation...

Maybe the companies should be a little more careful in what they produce. You want to stay in business, produce what the customer wants. If not, get out of the business and find something else you can do and do it well.

I am 42, I live in a 12 yo house (looking to have something newer built) and none of my stuff is pre 90 besides me and the wife.

I do have some things made in America. I try and look for US made stuff, but it gets harder every day. Electronics is about a lost cause. There are some clothing and other stuff.
Let's see: Monarch Lathe 10EE, SOuth Bend Lathe 9, three Dyna Metronics 3000H CNC lathes, made with foriegn and US parts. Two Ford COntours (?), Jeep Comanche, Flatzgraft plates, cup , bowls, SAS shoes, Redwing Shoes, Carolina Shoes, Sears Craftsman tool, three ACE R/C radios, various firearms, the picture tube on my Zenith was US made, a lot of my flyrods and reels, also other fishing stuff, Defiance VT-1 CNC Mill.
Sorry not Victoria Secret stuff. There might be others, such as the water heater, washer and dyer, fridge, oven, but I'd have to check. A few of the engines on my R/C airplanes are US made, K&B 0.40 & 0.60 also Fox motors, I think two .19 and a .46.
I don't know if my '75 Bricklin SV-1 would qualify. Its was made of assmbled in Canada with Canadian and US parts.
Tom

There are *some* things that are still built with quality.... I see some custom homes, and I am impressed with the craftsmanship.

Thats like 1 in 250.

Most homes are made out of 1x3s' (Cause they aint 2x4s) Wrapped in tyvec, vinyl windows, plastic plumbing, cardboard doors and trim... Right..... 350k for that?

Yesterday I saw a house being skinned with a brick veneer... It was like tile.

I remember once my dad went out to Arizona on business and bought me some tourquoise stuff, a string tie and something else, tat he said was made by the Indians out there. I turned it over and said, "Hey, Dad, Look. It says'Made in China.'"

That was in the early seventies.
