Ghost fleet near Singapore.

Interesting article about a parked fleet of cargo ships the size of the US and Britain's navy's combined. A sign of the world wide recession.

Thats a really great article! The night time shot is particularly spooky...

Hey Hattie.....bring your SIG and i'll get a boat. Then we just have to have someone lined up to take on a heck of a lot of scrap metal

Sounds like a businesman with balls and a deep checkbook could build a shipping empire on the cheap.

If you buy those ships for damn near nothing and the economy turns around in a few years you make bank, if not you fall into financial ruin.

I smell money.

As much as I love boats I can't get into shipping. I don't have the cash or know anyone.

But I wouldn't mind, if the stars lined up and I meet a good partner at the right time and could line up the cash I would do it.

Owning ships would be fun.

The problem is right now they cost more to operate then they rent for.
I've heard some ships currently running are barely covering day to day operating costs, fuel, crew, insurance ...
No extra for long term, maintenance etc type charges.

How much does a captain of a typical container ship make per year/voyage?

Per year? Solid six figures.

Offshore unlimited licenses were worth quite a bit when I was looking at Mass Maritime 5 years ago.
