Dog food

So, you think you know what dog food is preferred for the animal. You bypass the Purina dog chow, because that's obviously garbage, and you gravitate to the Science Diet because it's recommended and sold by most vets.

Then, you do a bit of research and find that the following ingredients are desired:

Desired Ingredients: The first ingredient should be meat protein (any kind). Other good ingredients are meat meal (any kind), rice, barley, potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, sunflower oil.

You also discover that some ingredients are better left out of the food:

Not desired Ingredients: Meat by-products (any kind), cheap indigestible fillers like corn, brewer's yeast/rice and soy, known allergens like wheat, vegetable oil

Now, you check out the labels of various products. The first 10 ingredients are listed.

1. Orijen: Chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, potato, whitefish, chicken fat, sweet potato, eggs, turkey, salmon meal

2. Innova EVO: Turkey, chicken, turkey broth, chicken broth, chicken meal, herring, carrots, eggs, salmon, flavorings

3. Wellness Core: Turkey, chicken, turkey meal, chicken meal, potatoes, tomato pomace, natural chicken flavor, canola oil, liver, salmon

4. Chicken Soup/Dog Lover's Soul: Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, fish meal, barley, brown rice, oatmeal, millet, white rice, chicken fat

5. Blue Wilderness: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Potato, Turkey Meal, Whitefish Meal, Salmon Meal, Tomato Pomace, Chicken Fat, Oatmeal, Natural Chicken Flavor

6. Nature's Variety/Instinct: Duck Meal, Turkey Meal, Salmon Meal, Canola Oil, Tapioca, Tomato Pomace, Pumpkinseeds, Herring Meal, Alfalfa Meal, Montmorillonite Clay

7. Taste of the Wild: Bison, venison, lamb meal, chicken meal, egg, sweet potatoes, peas, potatoes, canola oil, roasted bison

8. Canidae: Lamb meal, brown rice, barley, rice bran, peas, millet, canola oil, lamb, tomato pomace, natural flavor

9. Merrick's:Turkey, turkey broth, duck, chicken, chicken broth, liver, brown rice, sweet potatoes, carrots, peas

10. Natural Balance: Chicken, Brown Rice, Lamb Meal, Oatmeal, Barley, Duck Meal, Potatoes, Carrots, Chicken Fat, Tomato Pomace

11. Solid Gold: Ocean Fish Meal, Beef, Potatoes, Canola Oil, Tomato Pomace, Natural Flavoring, Salmon Oil, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Dried Chicory Root

12. Nutro: Broth, lamb, chicken, turkey, chicken liver, beef liver, rice, eggs, tricalcium phosphate, guar gum

13. California Natural: Lamb meal, brown rice, sunflower oil, rice, flavors, potassium chloride, vitamins, salt, rosemary

14. Newman's Own: Chicken, water, salmon, whitefish, rice, flaxseed, oatbran, kelp, guar gum, carageenan

15. Hill's Science Diet: Water, chicken, ground whole grain, corn, barley, soy, liver, dicalcium phosphate, salt, iron oxide

16. Pedigree: Water, chicken by-products, meat by-products, chicken, liver, beef, egg, tomato, vegetable oil

17. Cesar's: Water, chicken, liver, beef, meat by-products, starch, wheat, salt, potassium chloride, zinc sulphate

18. Alpo: Corn, bone meal, soy, chicken By-Products, Animal Fat, Poultry By-Product Meal, Rice, Salt, Iron Oxide, Calcium Carbonate

19. Kibbles 'n Bits: Corn, soybean meal, bone meal, wheat, animal fat, corn syrup, wheat middlings, water, animal digest (source of chicken flavor), propylene glycol

20. Purina Dog Chow: Corn, poultry by-product meal, animal fat, corn gluten meal, bone meal, brewers rice, soybean meal, barley, wheat

See any correlation between advertising and the quality of the product?

Apparently, most veterinarians value the money more than the animal.

I buy my dog 85% lean ground beef and chicken breast when on sale. I cook it up and mix with vegetables and add in some chicken or beef broth for moisture. She loves it and I know for sure what she's eating. She does get Beneful dry food in the morning for some balance.

Yea she's spoiled alright, but it really doesn't cost much more than that designer dog food stuff.

Find a hunter with surplus venison and make your own.

Otherwise, California Natural and Eukanaba. One of our dogs is allergic to crappy food and her reaction lets us know if food is good or not.

We switched my father's new dog to Eagle Pack after the dog before that ,a 5 year old healthy terrier died from the big dog food poisoning in 2007. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_pet_food_recalls His dog died the night before the recall. When I contacted Alpo that day to tell them they said their food was not affected by the recall. That changed a few days later.

I use to feed The Nugness Hill's Science Diet. The first thing I noticed was that he didn't poop near as much. The Nugness is 11 years old and still kicking strong. BTW that is The Nugness in my avatar.

It is?

Most of the dogs I've owned have been good eaters. We had one dog who was really fussy. He stayed skinny all the time, until we switched to Purina Dog Chow. That was the only food he seemed to like.

That was about 25 years ago and I've generally stuck with Purina since then. I guess you think I should reconsider. Sigh. It's always something.

The problem we're having this summer is all of our dogs are itchy all the time. We haven't figured out a solution to that one.

lots of dogs dont digest corn well, and that is the main ingredient in the more mainstream brands. also, some dogs have allergies to corn. it also makes them poop more. The other less know ingredients are what is more problematic: http://www.rense.com/general70/dead.htm

I agree, The Nugness has been eating Purina Lamb and Rice for the last several years and seem to like it. Also I have a question does a pure breed dog eat less dog food and crap less than a mutt? That have been the case with dogs we have had over the last 30 years.

I feed my dog a decent Adult food from "Healthwise" 17.5lb bag is about $22.....he likes it....and he's 14.3 years old now and will still chase his ball for 30 minutes a day AND go on a 2-3 mile walk. Its all in the dog, not what they eat (for the most part). He gets better food now than he did for a good part of his life, and yet he's still here.

That 17.5lb bag will feed him for about 2-2.5 months....he's a 21lb cockatzu. That's pretty cheap! Occasionally I'll give him a special cesar wet dog food meal or some real meat etc...but that is probably not even once a month.

Our other dog lived to be 13-14ish (put down last fall) and only had to be put down because she really messed up her hip one day (had been going downhill for quite a while) and was in major pain. She was a beagle mix, and was in otherwise decent health. All on "average" dog food.

Our old dog ate nothing but Purina dog chow for his 17 years.

Our other dog is 8 years old and has the same diet. She does get a variety of table scraps as well though. She will eat the strangest food, Brocolli, carrots, green beans and even beets. She will chew on a cob of corn until there is nothing left. Ironicly, my wife uses the empty 50 lb bag of dogfood to put the dog poop in. Seems like that weighs more than 50 pounds!

Well, don't forget that dogs don't smoke, drink, or chase after married women who have big, jealous NRA-loving husbands. They have to go sometime...
