6 year old brings AK-47 to school, suspended

Wait, Its not a assault rifle, maybe a hand gun? Nope... really, really long, sharp knife, maybe? Nope... Camping utensil?

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/12/education/12discipline.html?_r=2&hp

I used to bring my pocket knife to school all the time when I was in scouts. We weren't supposed to, but nobody got suspended or expelled when they got caught. The incredible one is the boy who got expelled because his grandmother included a knife to cut the boy's birthday cake.

Is anyone for zero tolerance in schools? I can't wrap my mind around how it actually helps children.

Moronic. But that's the nature of the society created by the nanny state.

I bet this is the type of school where plenty of kids bring laptops in. Want to find out how fast I can turn that into a much deadlier weapon then a spork?

The administrators in that district are complete complete morons in the technical definition of the word. There is no excuse for their irresponsible actions toward that 6 year old. They should be terminated. They have demonstrated that they cannot do the job.

Educational administration is filled with idiots. From the time I was in about the 4th grade I don't think I ever went to school without a jacknife in my pocket.

there really is no way in our litigous society to not make the same call. how would you feel if he used that knife on someone. to be fair to the school, it treats everyone the same and this way cant be held accountable for the decision. perhaps if there was more money in the school systems they could have a standard hearing and decide on a case by case basis, but who is going to pay for that when they cant find funding to buy books sometimes

That reminds me of an old comic strip about commercial airplanes called "The Captain and Mandy"

and in one stip, Mandy, the stewardess is saying, to an angry passsenger:

"But sir, if we let YOU bring your pet alligator on board, we would have to let EVERYONE bring their pet alligator on board."

Agreed. Look at the pic -- there is indeed a blade there. If there's a policy forbidding pocket knives, this is an easy call.

Whether or not this is an overreaction doesn't seem relevant. That's a pocket knife, for all intents and purposes. That's like taping a flashlight to a shotgun, and arguing that you ought to be able to take it into a bank since it's just a harmless light. We have no one but ourselves (by way of excessive litigation) to blame for these policies.

I think it's more than that. People in charge of our kids for big parts of their day probably wake up in cold sweats now and then thinking of the kind of crap that is within the realm of possibility of going down under their jurisdiction.

This is butt covering gone outta control more than any lefty nanny state-ism.

Newspaper? That's impressive. I thought it was pretty clever when they started making shanks out of toothbrushes.

As others have said, the policy is dumb, but if they change it, they may be sued. I don't know what to do about it.

Scissors tend to be my implement of choice in self defense

I got caught in first grade with my cub scout issued swiss army like tool.

However instead of being suspended and expelled I had it taken away, yelled at by the principal, and my mommy and daddy called. The difference was I was in a private school.

That family should highly consider transferring into a private school. I bet if she pleaded her case and the school interviewed the child there would be no problem.

Zero tolerance is a joke. If some psychopath really wants to hurt people, there is very little we can do about it. Sad but true. Maybe one day we can learn that it is impossible to safety pad every inch of our lives.

Years ago, I was taken - as a SF city employee in the Courts, --- on a tour of the San Francisco County jail (Hall of Justice upstairs)

The Prison guards were even then, still in awe of one prisoner, a really hard boiled piece of work, that had been a Lieutenant in the Shah of Iran's secret police (SAVAK) and got out when the Ayatollahs took over.

In the SF jail, this guy had somehow managed to carve, out of a bar of soap, an utterly realistic looking pistol!!

They took it away from him when they discovered it.

Was it Dillinger or Clyde Burrows of Bonnie & Clyde fame, who whittled a wooden pistol and held up the prison guard for an escape? I also carried a small pocket knife, in the early 80's to High School. I think back then you might get suspended. It had about a 3 inch blade. I don't think people relize how much damage a knife can do. There are suppose to be target areas were 3 inches can puncture vital organs. Also, slashing can cut into arteries. I do like to carry a weapon, though. I don't like the current situtation in public schools. Schools I have been in have been evacuated for bomb scares and a student bringing in a firearm. It seems things have gotten worst since then.
