Cowboys Stadium
Hideous: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0909/Dallas.Cowboys.Stadium/content.1.html
I finding nothing appealing about that stadium. Everything about it is excessive. My favorite football stadium was Scott Stadium at the University of Virginia back in the 1970s, before they started added upper decks to it. It was sunk into a hill and had huge evergreen trees around the perimeter. You could be standing right next to it and not even know it was there. Inside, it had one level of seats along each side and a big, grassy hill behind one end zone. The hill was generally filled with inebriated preppy UVa students, also known as Wahoos. The football team sucked, but we had a lot of fun at those games. Scott Stadium has been expanded over the years since then. It is still a nice stadium, but not quite as pretty as it once was. |

I am not a football fan. I have probably watched 2 or 3 football games on TV in the last decade. But I will be seeing U2 and Muse at Cowboys Stadium next month and am looking forward to it. U2 will pay $2 milliion to have the scoreboard raised to accommodate their 100-foot stage: http://views.washingtonpost.com/theleague/panelists/2009/08/everyone-feel-bad-for-darnell-levy.html
Yes, the stadium seems bloated, but I still want to see the inside...

They both move you from point A to point B. Cowboy stadium was by no means built solely as a place for the NFL to hold a football game. Welcome to the bazillion dollar world of live entertainment. If you look at what (unlike many/most other stadiums) the place is capable of providing, as well as the roster of events that are scheduled for Cowboy Stadium. You may get an idea of why it is “excessive”. Personally, I think it’s one heck of a building. “Excessive”? Perhaps. But that really depends on how you look at the big picture of what it was built for and is capable of providing its users. If I have anything to gripe about it. It’s the limited number of designated helipads available.

You are correct. It is excessive. But that is the world we live in today. He is going to make loads of money off of it.

I think that is what bugs me - not that the stadium will create so many jobs and other opportunities. That's all good. It just bugs me that this is the sort of thing that Americans want to spend their money on. People seem to place quantity on par with quality. Maybe Cowboys stadium has plenty of both quality and quantity, but I still don't see the attraction. If you want to hear live music, don't you want it to be in a venue where you can see and hear the performers up close? I saw the Rolling Stones at RFK Stadium several years ago. Bored me to tears.

Me too.
And personally... I’d much rather sit and watch a game on a field like Scott (or in our case Amon Carter at TCU) than Cowboy Stadium.

Like I said: "Welcome to the bazillion dollar world of live entertainment." We have yet to make plans for attending an event there. But our books are full of air-shuttles to and from.
