I can just see this happening....someone gets used to using this device and quickly dropping it in their pocket when done.....next they light the really thing take a few draws and are done, drop the real thing in the pocket and ignition.
I saw adds for this on the TV. I literally almost fell off of the sofa laughing at this thing

This has been around for a bit.

I'm sure it was created to combat all the smoking bans.

It's not quite as funny when you actually do it.:o Yup, I've done it.

For those of us fighting the addiction it's actually a handy aid. The smoking habit is not only a visual thing it's also a tactile desire.

chew gum

Yeagersocs 10-02-2009 11:24 AM

My brother has tried to quit multiple times--and was always unsuccessful--until he started "smoking" these.

I've never smoked a cigarette, but his explanation of the appeal was pretty convincing. Smoking addiction is a physiological and psychological condition; the chemicals in your body change and your mind becomes dependent on the comfort and release it associates with the habit.

So, the controllable release of nicotine satisfies the physiological demands of your altered body chemistry, but in a manner that allows you to slowly taper down.

The act of actually holding a "cigarette," the ritual of removing it from it's pack, the feel of it on your lips, these are all very important. Your body recognizes the pattern and relaxes, which in turn eases not only the psychological dependence, but actually diminishes the body's physiological resistance to change because it is tricked into a false sense of familiar security.

Gum cannot do that-- it is more prone to alert the body's natural defense mechanisms which strive to preserve the status quo, and thus resist a change to back to physiological "normalcy."

That said, I'm sure there are those who see these purely as an appealing novelty. That is sad.

Gotta love the new America. Innovation is stupid! Approximately 4000 fewer chemicals than the tobacco variants, dumb! No smoke, and the ability to use it everywhere including states that ban one's determination of the use of their own private property, sad!

1) These have been around for years, in countries far less "dumb" than America.
2) These have been around in AMERICA for a long time ... I love how they're just hitting the "news" now.
3) They're fairly smart, actually. Nicotine, by its little old self, is fairly innocuous other than being addictive. It isn't much more damaging than caffeine. What kills you in a cigarette is NOT the nicotine. This device is essentially a nebulizer that delivers only the nicotine, without all the crap that kills you. If you can't seem to kick smoking and need that fix, this is a major improvement. Major. Not dumb at all.
4) Please tell me how "smart" Chantix et al are. How many people have they killed again? E-cigs have not, on record, killed anyone yet. Are regular cigarettes smart? Because again, if someone offers a product that is acres ahead of the deadly one it's intended to replace, I don't consider that dumb.
5) Edit to add important thing I forgot: NO secondhand smoke. That's huge. The "smoke" that comes out is a harmless vapor that you can't even smell. I had to laugh when one of the politicians making a stand against the e-cig claimed that trace amounts of nicotine might escape in the exhaled vapor and out into the air. Really? Sounds awful. That would be almost as bad as if trace amounts of deadly carbon dioxide escaped people's mouths when they exhaled!!!

People are so shallow and quick to make fun of things. Of course it looks ridiculous on the outside. Try actually reading about it. You will also find it does have many flaws ... the main one, in my assessment, being that they're all made in China and unregulated, hence the FDA's finding of trace antifreeze in one sample. But the product itself is not new and it's not stupid. I think because of the arena the product is being advertised in and sold in (Internet, mall kiosks), for the most part, it comes off as being more gimmicky and tacky than it really is. But believe me, if Pfizer popped out one of these, everyone would be talking about how genius is was. FDA included ...

Personally, I think the ignorant thing in all this is how quickly people are writing this product off.

Medmech 10-02-2009 02:52 PM

Cigarettes are not addictive.

No, it hasn't. It actually hasn't been "proven" anything. And the FDA's report never goes so far as to state anything of that sort.

It's bad enough to believe everything you read. It's worse to believe everything you obviously haven't even taken the time to read thoroughly ...
