I have no idea at this point... I didn't necessarily think Chicago was a sure-thing, but I certainly thought it would make it out of the first round. Just as well... our state's in enough debt as it is. The money's not there to build more crap.

I'm not watching any of this...but my guess, at this point, would be the country that the US can throw major amounts of money at...through Corporate Sponsorships and related minutia...

Watch and see who, or what, jumps on the "We Are The World" bandwagon once the city is finally announced...

"Let the money flow...er....games begin!!!"

Madrid. Spain has become a major player in the alternative energy field. I'm sure this will become a selling point for a "greener" world theme.

Now, Rio, on the other hand, has some of the hottest babes and great beaches. I don't know how high on the agenda the "babe" factor is for the committee but it sure sways my vote!

Won't matter. The world ends for the South American continent in 2012 according to the Mayans. Madrid will win by default!

Do you think Obama flew to Copenhagen believing that his presence wouldn't make a difference?

Quote:
There has been a growing narrative taking hold about Barack Obama’s presidency in recent weeks: that he is loved by many, but feared by none; that he is full of lofty vision, but is actually achieving nothing with his grandiloquence.

Chicago’s dismal showing today, after Mr Obama’s personal, impassioned last-minute pitch, is a stunning humiliation for this President. It cannot be emphasised enough how this will feed the perception that on the world stage he looks good — but carries no heft.

It was only the Olympic Games, the White House will argue — not a high-stakes diplomatic gamble with North Korea. It is always worthwhile when Mr Obama sells America to the rest of the world, David Axelrod, his chief political adviser, said today. But that argument will fall on deaf ears in the US. Americans want their presidents to be winners.

Mr Obama was greeted — as usual — like a rock star by the IOC delegates in Copenhagen — then humiliated by them. Perception is reality. A narrow defeat for Chicago would have been acceptable — but the sheer scale of the defeat was a bombshell, and is a major blow for Mr Obama at a time when questions are being asked about his style of governance.

Exactly. And Chicago is not helped by Blago and the recent brutal murders of youth there.

I just now voted for Rio cause I thought all along that they'd get it based on the geography first time thing.

Spain had it a while back - Tokyo's had it, Asia just had it - SA has never had it and Rio is a major enough city.

One wonders if Africa will ever host one.

Rio Win 2016 Games as IOC Rebuff Obama

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Rio de Janeiro will stage the first Olympics in South America in 2016, the International Olympic Committee decided on Friday, delivering a stunning rebuff to U.S. President Barack Obama and favorites Chicago.

IOC President Jacques Rogge announced the decision to give the Games to Rio after three rounds of voting which produced a landslide victory for the Brazilians in a final showdown with Madrid.

Chicago, despite a speech to the IOC by President Obama, who had put his credibility on the line by flying in to address the IOC just before the vote, went out as fourth and last in the first round of voting, one of the biggest shocks in an Olympic ballot.

Chicago had started as front-runners and most Olympic observers had expected the Obama factor - first lady Michelle Obama spent two days lobbying in Copenhagen and also addressed the IOC session - to be decisive.

You think, also, that the reason that Chicago lost was that Ted Kennedy hasn't been vetted as a Chicago resident yet? That alone would have given Chicago another two votes! Right???

Oh, wait...I'm sorry. I thought we were talking about some Congressional voting going on here...

Never mind!
