Anyone know anything about Plasma Screens?
A friend of mine offered me his Pioneer Elite Pro 1000HD for free.. The downside is the picture has a pink tint to it. I hope this is not the plasma going out.
Anyways... I like the price of free, especially since he paid $15k for it when it was new. I hope I can fix it, if not oh well. |

I'm going to guess that it is shot, and not fixable. How old is it?
Plasmas suck compared to LCD....they gobble power and emit tons of heat, and they easily get screen burn in, especially the older ones........and don't last nearly as long. (probably why it turned pink)

This is going to sound like a dumb response, but start with adjusting the color balance. I'm assuming your friend knew enough to do that, but worth a try anyway. It's my understanding that plasma failure involves fading and burn-in, not odd hues. Although I guess faded reds would look pink, but not the whole screen. Do whites have a pink tint on the screen?

If all else fails, since it's free, you can just make the best of the pink screen and tell your friends its in support of breast cancer research.

well I might actually just pass on it because its not really a TV.. its more like a display monitor that can take an input from a DVR or w/e.. no built in speakers ,etc..
oh well.. I might fiddle with it |

The new plasma models are pretty efficient. I had my new panny plasma on for 2 hours and it wasn't even warm to the touch. Yep they can get burn in, so don't use them as security camera monitors. Under normal use they are fine. They last long enough. Even the old models were rated at 30,000 hours. Some rate theirs at 60,000 hours now. Plasma usually has a better picture quality, they are better for fast motion (although LCD are getting much better), better viewing angle, better contrast.

A couple of things you can do: First, get it degaussed. A magnetic field may have caused it to turn pink. If that doesn't work, you can use an old trick we did when a screen suffered burn in: Feed it a white source such as a camera aimed at a white poster board. This will reburn the screen and remove the pink if the pink tinge is a burn in. I'm betting the degaussing will do the trick.

Go for it. Here's a link to try:

Check with Pioneer's service center. Not too long ago, I thought my Pioneer panel was toast, but after checking their website, I found out that they had a service campaign to fix the problem (dead power supply board) for free, part & service. Called it in and sure enough, they FedEx'd the part to the repair shop and the guy came out to the house. Even he was surprised that Pioneer was footing the bill for everything.
Even if there is no specific service campaign, it could be something as simple as a generator or sync circuit, probably not the panel itself. |

LCD's last much longer in general too, especially the new LED ones. Life of 100,000 hours....and the CCFL ones can have the lamps replaced (But still last 50,000+ hours). I used to work somewhere where they used 4 plasmas as a static display of information. I said "who thought it would be a good idea to use plasmas for that?" I was told to shut up and that they knew what they were doing. Well....4 months later and two of them had failed already. Guess what they did? Swapped them all to LCD's.....they were not pleased when I reminded them of my earlier comment.

My Pioneer panel is over 10 years old and with the new power supply will probably serve for at least a few more years. The "hours" figure is actually pretty silly, since there's virtually no way that a home set is going to see that many hours over the estimated life of a home set.
I have no burn in after all those year, probably because we're not completely careless with it. The trade off in power consumption is Picture Quality. But I suppose environmentalist can justify the pixelation and constrast ratios for the Energy Star rating. |

My LG plasma started off this morning with a somewhat darker, less clear picture than before. It was excellent.
Since this morning, it has slowly gotten worse, now it has a pink hue and I can barely make out anything. I am out of warranty more than likely. This particular TV, or something closely resembling it can be had for about 700 to 800 bucks now. No way I'm paying more than 200 to get this one fixed. ****!

well maybe ill bring it home and see what I can do
the downside to the Elite is that its not really a TV.. its just a massive display monitor so I would have to get a digital TV box for cable to put a feed into it and then connect it to my surround sound for sound.. But, bah ill see about picking it up tomorrow. I was at my friends place today again and its still sitting there in his house. It will be wicked awesome if its an easy fix because I would have such an epic TV.. My current TV is only a 36" flat screen CRT unit. |
