Wait, Its not a assault rifle, maybe a hand gun? Nope... really, really long, sharp knife, maybe? Nope... Camping utensil?

I used to bring my pocket knife to school all the time when I was in scouts. We weren't supposed to, but nobody got suspended or expelled when they got caught. The incredible one is the boy who got expelled because his grandmother included a knife to cut the boy's birthday cake.

Is anyone for zero tolerance in schools? I can't wrap my mind around how it actually helps children.

Educational administration is filled with idiots. From the time I was in about the 4th grade I don't think I ever went to school without a jacknife in my pocket.

there really is no way in our litigous society to not make the same call. how would you feel if he used that knife on someone. to be fair to the school, it treats everyone the same and this way cant be held accountable for the decision. perhaps if there was more money in the school systems they could have a standard hearing and decide on a case by case basis, but who is going to pay for that when they cant find funding to buy books sometimes

The school boards are run by morons, but we live in a very litigious society thanks to all the sharks with law degree's.

If they try to use descretion someone will sue them for something. You let one to many white kids get away with it and your sued, pick on girls and your sued, a parent doesn't like that little Johny was near a knife just sue's you because they can. So the school board is really caught in the middle, and dumb to boot.

This is really just a sad reflection on how much of a wussy society we have become in the last 30 years.

That reminds me of an old comic strip about commercial airplanes called "The Captain and Mandy"

and in one stip, Mandy, the stewardess is saying, to an angry passsenger:

Those school boards have no choice. I think we as a society have to take a good look in the mirror. Laws like these will only get worse when they are "thought up" by populist politicians that are pushed by emotion instead of reason.
