Very Old Color Photographs.

I've always liked very old pictures but to see them in color is something else.

This set even predates World War 1

The first may be actual color film or a very good hand-painting job.

The second looks hand-painted. The third looks like a computer was involved.

For the reading comprehension challenged the OP made a reference to Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky, who was one of the pioneers of color photography.

From the article referenced:

Prokudin-Gorsky's own research yielded patents for producing colour film slides and for projecting colour motion pictures. His process used a camera that took a series of three monochrome pictures in sequence, each through a different-coloured filter. By projecting all three monochrome pictures using correctly coloured light, it was possible to reconstruct the original colour scene. Any stray movement within the camera's field of view showed up in the prints as multiple "ghosted" images, since the red, green and blue images were taken of the subject at slightly different times.

The early part of the 20th century was one of the best eras for photography. Prokudin-Gorsky captured state of the art in engineering feats made by a population of humble people seeming from another era, most of whom worked in fields.

Over a hundred years later and the major changes are kinds of fields in which the majority work, and, of course, how images are made.

Thanks for the post!

Dude, I think most of us here know how to use Wiki and Google. If you quote from a site, give them props. Thanks for the post though.

You can see in the first photo, the lady on the left moved in between exposures. Her cyan and yellow are unregistered.

From your reply to this thread, makes me think that you are familiar with the printing industry.

The 3rd one up from the bottom looks like it may have been taken inside a courtyard, or at least in the shadow of a building. Very little color registered.

I noticed the Bridge didn't move at all! Looks almost like real life.

The first one is of a WWI I assume, French artillery battery (-), meaning some guys missing.

The pictures look like they're from a dream almost.

When were they taken? I love old color photographs.

The first set during World War I, the second set predate The Great War.

I'm betting some of those are "photographs which have been colored" rather than "color photographs". Back in the 19th and early 20th century there was quite an industry in adding the colors, altho' I've found a 1908 color photograph of Samuel Clemens. Check out "autochrome".

Come to think of it, I recently learned that John Logie Baird (Scots inventor) developed mechanical television, 3D television, full color television, even infra-red television, before 1930. Got me interested, so I built a replica. A whopping 32 scanning lines. How times have changed.

Tom
Edit: added "some" in first sentence.
