Help with Machinist Jargon
Any insight into the nature of these terms and their details is appreciated.
-Lean Manufacturing -to 'update offsets' -to 'pick up zeroes' -Fanuc control |
Lean manufacturing - basically reduce waste in the manufacturing process, either with materials or to reduce the number of processes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lean_manufacturing
Update offsets is probably referring to tooling offsets. As the tool wears, it's tolerances and shapes change. There are also other offsets stored in CNC machines. Not sure about pick up zeros. FANUC is a large robotics company. The HAAS CNC machines (milling centers / drilling centers / toolroom lathes) that I used for my CAM courses at RPI used FANUC controllers. Hope this helps. :) |
thanks, Nate.
do you think 'picking up zeroes' could refer to achieving a zero decimal place by some method of machining? |
I think picking up zeros would mean being able to set up and maintain a zero on the macine, so the parts come out correctly.
We "set up" zeros where I work |

If it’s within the context of CNC work it may also refer to a programming element where the machine references "zero" positions at either the start of an operation or at points within a machining operation to ensure and maintain tolerances. Where's rickg when you need him? |
Pick up zeros? Easy scores at the singles bars?
|
"pick up zeros" or "zeroing in" usually refers to locating the part to the cutting head, usually with a dial indicator
Which means you should be handy with said indicators. learn g-code programming and you'll be fine with fanuc. |
