US Pineapples May Be Extinct

Maui Land & Something Else . . .

Durkin said Maui Gold pine is profitable on Maui and the Neighbor Islands, but not really so on Oahu, where it competes with Dole, the surviving pineapple plantation in the islands. But every fruit sold on the Mainland lost money. Prices there are just too low, he said.

Now, if the medical marijuana movement starts picking up momentum, we have the perfect agricultural land and branding . . .

I just learned how to trim and slice one of those things properly. Fresh pineapple is awesome.

I recently checked the label on a plastic six pack of Dole peaches. Guess what? China! My grand daughter 3 1/2 years old likes the little packages for a snack. At mach3 speed they hit the garbage can! I found the same kind of packages from Delmonte. Product of USA. I got on line to "contact us" at Dole. Sent the most scathing message I have sent to a corporation. Whatever happened to the peach state? I shouldn't use the forum for a rant. Thanks

Medical marijuana now could be like what tobacco was to the US in the 17th century.

I'm still VERY surprised that the tobacco industry isn't jumping onto that highly profitable opportunity.

The Calif State Parks system might give HI a run for their money; they're already producing.

Dole uses Peaches from wherever they can get em. I've seen them from China, Greece, Venezuala, South Africa and couple of other places I can't remember now.

I wish someone would find a way to grow lychees on the mainland. Those and them purple hawaiian potatoes.

We used to have Lychee trees backhome. I remember picking them off a tree at my cousins place when I was a kid. Not my favourite fruit though. For me those would be Katawba grapes.

We pay through the nose for exotic fruit but they're so awesome. Something about them. It's not something easily described in American terms.

I don't know about Maui, but Kauai has weed growing amongst sugarcane, all over the island. You can wander virtually anywhere and find good sticky buds...they have like three growing seasons.

Can't wait to go back.

Me to, but if it is laying on a salty slab of smoked ham it works.

One of the best "pineapple stories" . . . long ago, one of our clients was a local interisland airline. Like everyone else, they served pineapple juice onboard. Then one day, Boeing notified their customers that, based on some airframe inspections in Asia (they aslo served pineapple juice), the spillage was having an effect on the subfloors of the galley and service areas . . . so cut it out.
