Where to market an old gun?
I have an old gun of my father's that I want to sell on line....is there a place like that?
What can folks here recommend, please? |
You should look at the local, TV, Radio, News organization websites.
Here in Salt Lake City we have www.ksl.com and if you click on classified (top right corner) you can go down to: Firearms and hunting you can post any guns you have for sale. I don't know what are your state laws but here is not an issue to list: sell or buy. |
what kind of gun?

i would be very care full about telling MOPES on any site you have a firearm
old in being 1700s 1800s first WW! WW2 american euro type all makes a difference and a local gun range NOT store would be the best help take a photo dont drive around with it and ask local not on line someone if its worth anything might show up to get it -- just my take - jz |
Take it to Antiques Roadshow...

Do a google search on firearm forums. Plenty of advice there, you should be able to identify what you have and find out if it's a rare find. Online sales happen everyday, but there are hoops you have to jump through.
Here in Va there is a web site dedicated to firearm sales in-state, as here if you do a face to face sale between folks that live in Va, no paper work involved. And yes, the feds know about that! Each state has it's own law on the subject. Go to your states web site, that info should be there. Folks who live somewhere other than NJ or Cali don't worry about big brother. When you find out what it is, let us know. |

^ No, they just give you an estimate. Some unscrupulous types may lurk and try to cheaply purchase something from an unsuspecting person. Do some research on the web first.
At worst PM me. |
If it's old enough it might not be considered a firearm but an artifact.

Go to your local gunsmith and ask. Actually, ask several. What sort of gun? There are many gun nuts here and they might give you an honest opinion of what the thing is worth as opposed to someone who is trying to buy it cheaper and sell it for more.

I am somewhat nervous about selling a gun. If that gun is put to bad use, You'd be asked what happens to it if it could be traced back to you. Of course, you could always produce the bill of sale, etc, etc but it would be a hassle. When I sell a gun, I do it either on consignment via a gunsmith or to the gunsmith. That way, the trail ends with them and ATF knows where to go besides my door.

DON't shoot the Sharpei's just because they snore.

You do not have to be a licensed dealer to sell a firearm. By Federal law, the person to whom you ship the gun must be a licensed dealer. If the buyer is not a licensed dealer, the buyer must make arrangements with a licensed dealer in his state to receive the firearm and transfer it to the buyer. We have very in-depth information on shipping firearms legally on our Firearm Shipping Guide page. Never, under any circumstances, ship a firearm without following the steps on the Firearm Shipping Guide page! Shipping illegally is a felony and will earn you a one-way ticket to prison. Non-firearm items, such as air guns, knives, ammunition, antique guns that were built in 1898 or earlier, accessories, and some gun parts do not require transfer by a licensed dealer. There are age restrictions on many of these items, and you must verify the age of the buyer (typically by requesting a Xerox copy of the buyer's driver's license) before selling the item to the buyer. In general, you should not sell anything to a buyer under 18 years old. To buy Pistol ammunition, the buyer must be at least 21 years old; at least 18 years old for Rifle ammunition. Please refer to our Firearm Shipping Guide for information on shipping ammunition, gun parts, and antique firearms. |
