I think I read that more humans are killed by Hippos in Africa than any other wild beast. The huge jaws have huge teeth and though a hippo is not interested in eating you they are extremely grumpy about being disturbed and can do huge damage in a heartbeat.

I wonder if this photo has been doctored?

I cannot imagine a croc messing with hippos.

I don't think a hippo actually has any natural enemies in the wild.

I think crocs will try and take a smaller hipo. Usually, the herd will set up a barrier of bodies to protect their young. I did remeber a PBS special on a killer croc. This thing was huge. I think it killed several villagers. They had film of it and the hipos were backing up. They tried to capture it. I think they called it 'Gustav'.

Hippos always seemed sort of slow and benign to me. It's hard to imagine them being really dangerous. Any animal that large and in person is pretty intimidating, though. I'd love to see a video of what happened in between those two pictures. That would be pretty interesting.

There's a book which is an extremely good read. It's called, I believe, "Death in the long grass". It's written by a big game hunter/guide in Africa. Some great tales of all the dangerous animals in Africa. The hippo is the one animal all the guides feared. They are almost impervious to 99% of the rifle shells, their teeth cause horrendous wounds, any bite from a hippo results in certain infection and when they are on the march they deviate from their course for nothing!

Try this link for an excerpt from Peter Capstick's book, "Death in the long grass".

They also come out of the water at night so I would make it a point to camp as far from the water as possible....preferably in a roof top tent.

You can do a search on YouTube or Google of hippotomous (sp) dangerous. There are more than a few clips of them vs crocs, lions etc. They look as fast as the crocs. I also remeber reading an article of some hunter on pigs. He had hunted various dangerous or semi-dangerous game. He thought pigs were the worst and sneakyist. I think in the article he was treed by a pack of Javelinas.

Yup. That looks far enough from the water!

What's the shiny cylinder in the center of the pic? Fire extinguisher or soda water dispenser for your scotch and sodas?

It would be fun to face one down with lots of ammo and a well - aimed Panzerfaust or an RPG.

They are in fact one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.
