I have a Garmin Rino GPS/radio, a cellphone and a paper map that I always take with me when I ride my snowmobile. Why you would want to wander about Russian mountains essentially bareassed is a mystery to me.

You let yourself get lost.

I’ve been on numerous all day ATV and sled excursions with some rather large groups (10 or more).

As easy as it is to think that you’ll all stick together and play “follow the leader”. I’d never trust that thought. And I’d guess/hope you wont again either. Everyone needs to know exactly where the group is going and how to get there. Then, there’s this thing they call a “map”.

We've always made sure that everyone has what they should for an unexpected extended trip goes. You never know when someone will have a break-down and need to partner up and stay with their rig while others go for help/parts/whatever. We always do the “minimum 50” thing. Always take 50% more water and food (simple granola bars are fine) than you think you’ll need.

As for your partners...I’d say they had no business out there in the first place, for sure.
A decent GPS with a "bread crumb" feature is probably a reasonable investment.

On top of that, all the brought between them was a bottle of whiskey for an all day outdoor trip. They were hoping to find a restaurant. Yeah, right. We are riding in the middle of noweheres in the hills of UT and you want a restaurant in the middle of the trail. You want fries with that too? No water, no soda, no snacks or lunch. They were warned that we would be riding from sunup to sunset and advised to bring lunch. Needless to say, after they got me lost, I was not in a generous mood so the wife and I ate and drank while waiting for rescue. I even did the water pouring scene where you drink what you want and dump the rest in the sand while they watched on. Stupidity should be punished.
I probably would have hung with them until I realized that their whiskey was not single malt...

I was behind a couple of people who got separated. Since I was following them and they were following the guy in front, I'm not sure what it is I could have done. When the fork came up the guy in front stopped and didn't know where to go. There were tracks to the right and to the left. We had to stop there and hope the main body would find us and backtrack.

It was the first guided tour I had and the guide basically told us to keep in touch and play follow the leader. Get lost, stop and the guy in front should stop and so on. This was a group of people we never met before. Not much good a map does if you never learned how to read it. If they had programmed the course in my GPS that might be different. That is why I keep a GPS on me whenever I travel. That way I know how to get back home.

Guide did warn us and we were prepared. Those numbnuts weren't and since they didn't stop like they should till the whole group stopped for a break, I wasn't feeling charitable towards them.

Don't care what they do but I have their names so if ever we were to take a tour, I'd make damned sure they were not in front of me but behind me. Then maybe I can try return the favor.

I have 2 GPS units. One on my ATV and one on the wife's. They are jacked into the cig lighter and have spare batteries.

The FSB, which replaced the KGB, doesn't do that any more. They send them to be real estate agents in Michigan, where they die of despair.

Considering how cheap and available a Thuraya is, why not get one? It also has a GPS feature.

They were probably offed by the Russian mob, come on...

If I was going on a backwoods ride like that I would want to bring some stuff...a good lighter for starters, a real knife, maybe a few MRE's would be nice if you got lost, rope, map, GPS, GPS, and GPS.

My line of thought would be if I have to spend a few days out here what do I need to keep alive...

Hattie, you are 1000% correct and quite logical in your thinking. The Russians are neither. They seem totally lost unless someone tells them what to do. That's why their leaders are are so obsessed with planning and plans.

In the old days the GOS plan - government plan-- ruled everything.

No GOS plan, no idea what to do.
