Two Tourists Go on Snowmobile Trip and Commit Suicide When They Get Lost

Two Russian tourists, who went on a snowmobile trip in the mountains of the republic of Khakasia, were found dead. The tourists – two entrepreneurs - supposedly committed suicide after they found out that they had run out of fuel and had neither matches nor food with them. The two men hanged each other.
The bodies of two men, identified as Dmitry Gromov and Pavel Derebyankin – were found on Sunday afternoon near the Ters River. The men were relatives – an uncle and a nephew. They both lived in the city of Achinsk, the Krasnoyarsk region, and were working in the field of commerce, RIA Novosti news agency reports.

The men, aged 20 and 35 went on a snowmobile trip on October 23, but they did not tell anyone of their intention, nor did they inform anyone of the route of the trip.

They were reported as missing on October 27. The bodies of the two men were found hanging on trees in the woods, some 20 kilometers far from the town of Priiskovoye, The Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote.

One of the men used his scarf, whereas the other one used his shoe laces for committing suicide, a law-enforcement officer said.

The bodies were hanging on different trees for two days, investigators said. The footprints that were found near the scene were the footprints of the two men – no one else’s footprints were found nearby.

“The tourists had no food reserves, they got lost, were exhausted and eventually decided to commit suicide. Their valuable things, including money, were found with them. However, they had no matches. They also had the snowmobile keys, although the snowmobile itself has not been found yet,” a law-enforcement officer said.

The men might have been murdered because of their snowmobile, but investigators say that it was most likely a suicide, which they committed out of hopelessness.

Sounds to me, from the lack of planning etc., like that trip was suicide from the very beginning.

Sad.
You'd think they'd be better prepared than that.

I have been on ATV trips where we had couples that didn't know squat about how to ride in the group or what to bring. This couple just rode on their merry way not noticing that we have been left behind and when the road forked, we didn't know where to go. On top of that, all the brought between them was a bottle of whiskey for an all day outdoor trip. They were hoping to find a restaurant. Yeah, right. We are riding in the middle of noweheres in the hills of UT and you want a restaurant in the middle of the trail. You want fries with that too? No water, no soda, no snacks or lunch. They were warned that we would be riding from sunup to sunset and advised to bring lunch. Needless to say, after they got me lost, I was not in a generous mood so the wife and I ate and drank while waiting for rescue. I even did the water pouring scene where you drink what you want and dump the rest in the sand while they watched on. Stupidity should be punished.

Nope. 2 ATVs and 2 Jetskis. See sig. Not enough snow here to make me want to buy a snowmobile. That is, unless I plan to trade the wife off for a different model.

Hanging is over in less than 5 mins. Freezing takes longer.

Surprised that the shoe strings held... Someone I knew with tried that, only to break the strings, and sprain both ankles. He was a bit heavy set tho...


Wonder it they had other issues that made them want to commit suicide, or if it was just camping gone bad.

Somewhere in that story, there is a little error on your part, Aklim.
You let yourself get lost.

I’ve been on numerous all day ATV and sled excursions with some rather large groups (10 or more).

As easy as it is to think that you’ll all stick together and play “follow the leader”. I’d never trust that thought. And I’d guess/hope you wont again either. Everyone needs to know exactly where the group is going and how to get there. Then, there’s this thing they call a “map”.

We've always made sure that everyone has what they should for an unexpected extended trip goes. You never know when someone will have a break-down and need to partner up and stay with their rig while others go for help/parts/whatever. We always do the “minimum 50” thing. Always take 50% more water and food (simple granola bars are fine) than you think you’ll need.

As for your partners...I’d say they had no business out there in the first place, for sure.
