Looking for a car forum for...

A BMW in particular the 8 series from the 90's. Anybody know of a specialty forum for that?

They are such beautiful coupes. Back in the day, along with the Jaguar XJS, those 8 series were the *DIRECT* competition to the 560SEC.

At a Eurosunday meeting two weeks ago, I met a man there who collects those particular BMW cars.

He did not disagree with me too much when I said to him,

~~~They never were accepted that much by other BMW owners even when they first came out.
Real BMW fanatics maintain that the only REAL BMW was the 2002.
And amongst them, there exists a lunatic fringe of them that say, no, the ONLY REAL BMW is the 2002tii.:D
~~~The V12 850i model is more to be avoided, as it is dangerously complicated and thus suspect to becoming a true money pit, in the worst way, (like the 6.9 in your signature that you so covet)

~~~The 840i is a better bet but it too can be a gamble, especially when it comes to electricals and horrific things like dashboard pixels depixillating, etc.
~~~They are VERY sexy looking coupes though especially without the headlights on. Rear seatroom, as with many coupes like this are better suited for amputees, bags of groceries, children, or dogs that are not too big

~~~Best examples that are for sale, are most likely found on enthusiast fora that cater to them. Such as bimmerforums etc. Same as right here.
~~~ Specific wheel choice, and more importantly - color, counts a LOT.
Darker matallics, like red, blue and black, look the best, when choosing a car.

~~~ Pay the most, when buying, that you can afford, for the one in the best condition, lowest miles and most records with it. Saves BIG in the long run.
You may want to confirm whether or not the 840 was involved in the Nikasil block fiasco.
Sounds like something out of the Carter administration.
I saw an interesting looking 850i for sale in MD last summer for about $16k, I was tempted but I thought better of it.
as for the 740's the issue was cured in 96
Just sold the 6.9 after 10 years. It required maintenance, but it was no money pit.
That would be the Dodge Aspen, in which a nikasil block probably would have represented an improvement.
We actually had a new Aspen 318 in our family back in '76. It was compelling evidence that Chrysler had apparently fired all of its engineers back in 1970...
All along I had a hunch that you were an AMC man. :D
I think the best looking BMW is the 3.0csi. I brought one back from Dubai and it turned heads everywhere I took it.
The sharknose? Those are stunning.....
tinypanzer 12-08-2009 11:32 PM
Maybe so, but I just sold my '78 volare (225 slant 6) to my roommate. That car is utterly unstoppable. Can't kill it. Always starts, always runs, even after sitting for years. I was foolish enough to restore it mechanically with more parts than I care to list. The end result was a car that was miserable to drive but ran like a top.
Wow, your dad and my dad had the same taste in cars. I remember a brown 74 Hornet and a beige Plymouth Caravelle with the slant 6.
Funny. I was at the Toys for Tots Mercedes car show put on by by Gerhard in Huntington Beach last weekend.
One of the guys had a perfectly restored '67 250 SL.
Next to his car was a guy with a Bricklin for sale (had gullwing style doors), which was for sale.
We got to talking about the Bricklins. Some had AMC engines and some had 351 Windsor Ford V8's. This one had a 351.
The fellow with the 250 SL said he bought a brand new Javelin in '74 with the big V8. Said it was the best car he ever had, and regretted selling it.
This was actually an aunt's car, and pretty much was a bare-bones model, with automatic, power steering and AM radio, and that was it. It had a wheezy 100 hp 232 c.i. 6 cylinder and pretty much ran out of power at 70 mph. It was a fairly new car when I drove it one day and the brakes failed on the interstate. I found this out when I was performing my patented 60 mph entrance onto a 25 mph exit ramp. My spinchter muscles finally relaxed around 1979...
The local Bricklin dealer was also our local Pontiac-Buick dealer, and I recall sitting in more than a few Bricklins in the showroom. The early seventie's Javelin/AMX models were a very decent alternative to GM/Ford pony cars. I alway thought that the first-generation AMX was one of the better-looking cars on the road in its day.
That's exactly what we were saying.
