Universal garage door opener

A client wants me to find a new remote for her older model garage door opener. It's a Chamberlain and they say on their site that they do not support pre '93 openers because the new ones are safer, better, and they make more money that way. Well, they're probably right.

This one must be older than that as it has no light beam tripping switch. Her children are adults so she's happy to have the older style.

I found this site for a universal remote - they say it covers Chamberlain:

Anybody ever try this route? Not sure how you'd get the old receiver to communicate with the new sender but there must be a procedure for that.

I didn't do exactly that but I did buy a kit from Sears I believe, that had a little box and 2 remotes. The box is a digital receiver that simply wires to the manual switch terminals on the opener.

It's worked perfectly for close to 15 years now and the built-in remote on the E300 was even able to "learn" the code.

The one you linked is probably similar in function to the one in the car. You have to have an old remote to transmit the code to the new one.

I found it: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00953751000P?mv=rr

I like the route you took. I can't tell if it's the sender or the receiver that's at fault here. The opener works fine with the wall switch so that's not the problem.

Also she has only one remote (a problem right there, even when it's working) so if this one is not working, I'll have no way to communicate the existing signal to the new device.

I'm hoping that a switch is a switch and the new receiver ought to be easily wired in to operate the opener. That's about how it worked out for you, I take it.

Every opener I've seen has had a low voltage contact closure to operate the door if the remote craps out. That replacement box just plugs into the same outlet in the ceiling that the opener is plugged into and then wires to the screw terminals where this switch is connected.

My idea for a 'universal' opener would be if I could use my iPhone.:D

I guess people don't use their hands anymore.

Sacre Bleu!!:o:D

What's the point of an attached garage if you have to get out in the rain and wreck your doo (not to mention your back) lifting a double door? :D;)

Uh oh. You just gave away the idea that could have made you rich. If there's not an app for that, I'll bet it's on the way.
