Troubleshooting DVD/TV Combo Unit - No Sound
Sylvania 9 inch CRT tube with DVD combo. Used 3 times by a friend, now there is no sound, so they just gave it to me. DVDs load and picture looks great, however there is no sound.
I already did the following: * opened the unit and checked for the obvious - can't find anything blown at all, no loose ribbon cables, etc. * checked internal speaker connections and they are good. * plugged headphones into the mini jack in case it was "stuck" in the engaged position, but that's not the case. In addition, there's no sound out of the headphones. * checked the aux out audio RCA jacks to see if they are "stuck" in the engaged position, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I can readily identify the power circuitry and board (upper one), the DVD drive and associated controllers (obviously) as well as the data ribbons (2 of them). The whole thing sits on a large board. I have looked at the solder joints on the underside of the large board and can't see anything that stands out. I also looked for a loose or disconnected audio cable, as one would find inside a PC, since most of these drives are shared across platforms anyway, but the whole drive assembly is clustered in the middle. It's very difficult to see, and I don't feel like peering into there with the thing reading the disc (don't feel like getting free lasik surgery). But I doubt it's a loose cable anyway. It's almost as if the audio amplification circuit took a dump, since there's not even white noise over the speakers when the volume is jacked to max. Similarly, no white noise on headphones. Anyone have any ideas or familiar with this type of circuitry? I tried looking for a DIY forum for electronics, but it seems such a forum is rarer than hen's teeth.

Make sure it isn't some setting on the remote. There are some weird "alternate audio channel" settings sometimes. I pushed that button once and couldn't get my sound back. That was with cable though. You might post on www.highdefforum.com
And try searching the model # and the word "sound"
