Why are mbworld users such jerkasses?

I'm just curious as to why the tone on this board is generally civil and productive, while on MBworld, you can't make a simple suggestion without having 6 idiots jump down your throat. Last time I posted there all I did was suggest to a guy that he replace the often used instrument cluster lights (low fuel, high beam, etc.) on his 126 while he had it out with ones from a junker cluster's less used bulbs (ABS, Engine, etc.). The replies were nothing short of belligerent and I haven't posted there since.

A google search on an issue I was having lead me to a thread there today, and I just shuddered when I saw the tone of the posts. Yuk!

As a kid, my dad used to joke about "the jerk in the Merc", which was a pretty decent stereotype for NYC in the early 80s.

I'm just wondering what polarizes the cool and helpful folks over here and the juvenile idiots that plague their forum over there......

Is it just good moderation? Is there some social phenomenon at work here?

What gives?

I am long gone from there for the same reason, even the Moderators themselves are bad like that, and insult people.

That place is not worth the price of admission. <----and it's free.

Lets just pat ourselves on the back at what good people we are!

Actually it does have something to do with the job of the moderators.
Does that indicate that we, as a society, NEED a good police force?
Peachparts--the metaphor.

I believe that the answer is a resounding yes. I view society, taken as a group, to be basically unlawful and an individual will do nearly anything to further himself in that society. Survival of the fittest as it were. Only the potential for an infraction by the enforcement agency prevents widespread mayhem.

Take a look at the way 50% of the people drive. There is absolutely no respect for any speed limits..........turn signals............handicapped spaces. The reason is that there is no enforcement of these transgressions.

Now, if you choose to stickup a bank, most people conclude that they will be caught...........and, hence, there is little desire to make that attempt.

Naturally, you can cite many good people who do not behave in similar vein. However, I believe they are in the minority.

Forums operate in a similar manner. If there is little moderation, you'll find a few members try to bend the rules when they get upset.........."GFY" will be common. If nothing is done about that transgression, further personal insults will be encouraged. It doesn't take long for the forum to degrade to the lowest common denominator.

One of the most important aspects of law enforcement is the visibility factor. If the police had no vehicle with lights blazing on the side of the road, most motorists wouldn't have any idea of whether enforcement is present or not. This visibility will typically cause a change in behaviors if it's prevalent.

This forum now operates in a similar manner. When all members see the violation of the TOU, they'll think twice in the future before descending to that level. It's been very successful.

Yeah, all forums get to the point the moderators let it. As BC mentions, society in general is more of "what's in it for me and screw you". I've remembered a line I heard years ago, "without consequences, there is chaos."

Understanding that I am in the minority, here, I would say it demonstrates that we are all sinful creatures.
Not trying to turn it into a "religious" thread, just pointing out that there is truth in what the Bible ( rightly understood) says.

Not only are we sinful creatures, in a medium where you can post what you want with a fair amount of anonomity, some feel they can put down everything that would normally be supressed if it were done face-to-face.

I dunno...we seem to have GTGs and other encounters on this site that puts faces with names...probably makes things a bit more civil.

Do they initiate GTGs at MBWorld?

Which is just a theologically convoluted way of saying that we are a species evolved to live in small orally communicating groups of no more than about 160 members and we have exceeded these natural limits by inventing cities, writing and the internet. To deal with these problems, we invent Gods and call ourselves sinners. Once we realize the gods are fictions, we substitute moderators. Perhaps MBWorld is still relying on gods.

Well with a Forum name of PeachParts is it any wonder we are alittle warm-n-fuzzy over here? Seriously though, I've been over to the dark side and they tend to be a bit mean-spirited, life is to short to hang out with mean people.

We can get kinda rough on noobs in the Cars for sale forum though (go ahead, tell us your W123 can go 1 million miles...)... a small price to pay as many fora do not allow people with less than X posts to advertise for sale stuff at all...
