Best way to sell an 81300SD advice thread

Not sure if this is the right place or way to seek advice on selling an old Benz but!

I have not sold a car since 1994 (when my blessed 911SC was sadly sold).

I bought a newer 04 E320 to replace my 81 300SD which I bought used in 1993.

I have no clue as to the best sites to offer a used, particularly 29 year old car and would appreciate some advise from those here that have likely done this since 1994 when it was a print/sell world.

Wulfmann /:f

Out with the old (I will wash it for the 1st time in 5 years!!)

In with the new(er)

Is there???

I am seeking advice on where to put this old 81 up for sale and hoped some members here could share their thoughts on what works and what to avoid.

Is there a way to ask this without referring to a car??

Is there a BST forum here, now that you mention it

Thanks but forum is to sell stuff. I actually wanted some advice on the various ways one can sell on the internet like eBay, Auto trader, Craig's List and feedback on what to do not do and to watch out for. before I can use the BST here I assume there is at least a minimum post/time requirement so getting some info from you "Experten" would be appreciated.

Seems like you know all the selling sites. Take some good pictures, give a thorough description, and price it right. Other than that, just use some common sense.

You can post in the cars for sale forum at any time.

The best results are obtained as follows:

1) Clean the car thoroughly and detail it.
2) Take some semi-professional photos of it that are all within four feet of the target..........both interior and exterior.

3) Put the photos on an external server such as Image Shack and link them to your post.

4) Describe the condition of the car in as much detail as possible, including everything that does not work.

5) Describe all maintenance and repairs done to the vehicle throughout your ownership

6) Describe what you believe is still needed to be done in terms of repairs.

7) State the mileage and whether you believe it to be accurate or not.

8) Put a realistic selling price on it considering the mileage and the condition.

If you do all of the above, you'll sell it quickly.

Thanks,

I have no clue what the car is worth.
I have had it since 1993.

In 1998 the odometer stopped working at 250K.

In 1999 I had the motor rebuilt and everything was replaced new OEM except the crank and the block. New cam, valves, pistons (Bored out to a 3.2) head you name it new.
The trany was rebuilt by a guy now moved to Ohio and my Mercedes mechanic stated he could not do as well nor are the factory rebuilds as good.
I replaced the drive shaft and rear end and all the suspension parts.
It has 88 420SEL 15" alloys

Since then I have used it as a gun range car.
It has not been washed in 5 years.
It stays in the garage with everything in it for the range so I only need to put firearms and ammo in to go (I would always forget something so this worked well)

However, I simply did not fix anything else that was not involved in starting and stopping.
So, the AC, heat and fan don't work and 2 of 4 windows don't work but with decent weather I wouldn't hesitate to drive this to CA and back.

In the last ten years since the rebuild I have not driven 3K miles in any year (No odo but I know how many/few times I fill the tank) So there may be 25-30K on the drive train but I have no way to prove that

I have not kept up on what these are worth and do not know what they go for. I pulled up the book price which calls these collectors with prices ranging from a low of $5,100.00 to $11,000 for an 81 which I find hard to believe.

I will wash the old girl and take some pictures (retired photojournalist) and perhaps some here can suggest what ever a fair price would be.
The motor etc are likely worth more outside the car than everything together but I am not that ambitious

Just want it to go somewhere.

Truth is I was hoping on finding a mint SD with a blown motor that I could put the drive train in but just decided to buy the E320 and move on

I appreciate all and any advice.

You may be right in thinking it's worth more apart. I'm not familiar with an overbore on these cars, so you may want to go in to some detail on that.
I paid $2100 three years ago for mine, A/C doesn't work, only two windows work, everything else is fine, 183k. It has the latest (for 1983) CCU, no servo.
A not so good looking exterior will lower the price.
I usually forget something when heading to the range too, but I keep my bag full, don't want to leave that stuff in the garage either.
