15 Year Coolant???

My service adviser said the change interval for coolant replacement on my 2005 E500 is now 15 years, up from 3 years. Some sort of new coolant.

Is this possible?

I agree, but he works for the dealership that gets paid when they do work.

Why would he eliminate paid work?

New Mercedes vehicles (2004 and newer) have a small "puck" of chemicals set in the cooling system to replenish the anticorrosives. Fluid level still has to be maintained and monitored.

General Motors has a 150,000-mile interval, but sets a five-year limit, the same as Ford and Chrysler Group, which have a 100,000-mile limit. Toyota went to a 10-year interval, also with a 100,000-mile limit. Honda has a 10-year/120,000-mile interval. Mercedes really raised the bar-to 15 years/150,000 miles

Around these parts we check our coolant every fall and make sure it's spec'd to -40F.

A friends water cooled BMW motorcycle has antifreeze for the life of the bike. Granted there usually fewer miles on one. It's more viscous than the other stuff I've seen.

I wonder if they use NPG in that application.

They had to use something to replace the FSS debacle. Few original owners will be around to scrape the corrosion off in 15 years.

Even if, by some strange miracle, the coolant is capable of actually lasting that long, other items will fail before that anyways. If you need to change a hose, Thermostat, Heater core, Temp sending unit, or Head Gasket, before 15 years, you'll need new coolant in the process. Not to mention how much simply evaporates over time. Washer fluid will last 15 years also, as long as you don't ever actually use any of it. 15 years...Just like GM, with their 100,000 mile Dextron coolant...Hah! I just did a head gasket job, on a two year old Buick, with 30,000 miles on it. I also recently did a water pump job on a three year old Caddy. In both cases, put all new coolant anyways. So, who cares if the factory, or dealership says the coolant will last 100k, if nothin else under the hood will anyways? Don't be suckered into what they tell you.

Good points.

Like FSS, this is marketing smoke and mirrors.

Unknown, not only that, I don't know what NPG is.

Sorry about that. Non-aqueous Propylene Glycol. It is popular for street rods, is not water based, does not require a pressurized cooling system, and has about a 300deg. F boiling point at atmospheric pressure. It is also an excellent water pump lubricant and has no corrosive properties. Google Evans Coolant.

You misheard him, he was talking about your blinker fluid.

Nah - he told me that still has to be replaced every three years.
