Frank, you're right on the mark...my little guy even has a touch of asthma and wheezes sometimes...and snores like a freight train. He loves barking at squirrels and birds but would no more chase one than learn to drive a car. He's kinda lazy like me...

My older brother attended Southern Illinois University, so I guess this is my second Saluki. I named my pup Tracy, that after a good friend of my now deceased brother, who also attended SIU.

Howdy Ron,
Good looking big boy. Should be done growing now. Just has to fill out. Your next pic can you get a side shot of him just standing? How is the puppy fur doing? How is he running these days?

I have this shot from about 2 weeks ago.

I shaved him just before taking that pic. His fur is starting to come back on his outer legs (rears especially), and on top of his head a little bit, though it's laying flat and looks fine. It is not coming back at all on his chest or inner legs as yet.

The only place he runs is in the house and yard. He's too scared to run at the dog park, and I won't let him off lead out in the desert until he's good and tired from hiking a few miles. I wish there was someplace he could just let it rip, but the desert terrain here is pretty rough on tender puppy feet.

I'm wondering, at 57 lbs, is he a tad heavy? Think I should cut his food back a bit?

Howdy Ron,
Should be able to see some ribs and the rear hip bones should be easily seen. If that is the case then you should be ok between 55 and 60 lbs. He will fill out a little more and be at the high end. As far as being scared. That might be the way he will be. Since you got him at a later age he probably just had interaction with his siblings and parents and didn't get much socialization with strange dogs. You might be able to help him get some confidence by just taking him out to meet other dogs. But I'm not sure it will help. Also he might be comfortable with certian dogs and not others. I had a rescue dog that was afraid of every dog that got close until I got him into lure coursing. He was one of the best. He was still a little shy standing still on a leash but had no problems when getting ready to run :-) Catch you later.

As an interesting aside....I took my dog to the vet for what I thought was asthma.

Turns out dogs don't get asthma. Cat's do, but not dogs.

Howdy Paul,
Interesting. I didn't know that. I posted the ? in another group. One person read up on asthma and said that dogs may not get it and the symptoms sound like indicators of heart problems. What was the diagnoses on your dog? Do you still have the one you ran with?

Yes, this is the same dog that I used to run 3 miles / day with - Peewee, the weenie dog.

Turns out she has allergies, so she's better now on the meds, but not 100%.

She's 13 years old now, and in semi-retirement. She still thinks she's a retriever, so I take her to the park everyday to play fetch, which is her life's work, but we don't go running anymore. She's just too old and doesn't have it in her anymore.

Howdy Paul,
Chime, my 11 year old doesn't go with me and the young guys into the field anymore. She will run a lap on the property and then lay on one of the beds outside to watch the world go by.
