Who has Salukis?
3 Attachment(s)
Anybody? :D
He's just a pup, and wearing an awful lot of puppy fuzz. |
I don't have one but he is a handsome little guy.
|
Thats a puppy?
How big do they get? |
He's nine months, so nearly full-grown. I'm hoping he'll grow about one more inch.
|
Very cool.
Mr. Frank X. Morris has Salukis, correct? |
That's what they say.
|
Nice looking pup there, his body looks like a Greyhound. I wonder if there is any Greyhound in his lineage.

I wanted a Saluki as a kid but my dad wasn't into dogs as much as I was. |

Howdy Ron,
I see you all have survived so far LOL. How has the housebreaking and general transition gone? Have you been able to measure him to see how tall he is? Measure to the shoulder at the base of the neck. Has he been out to run yet? He should be fast even at that age. Good luck with him. |

No Greyhound in Salukis. Debate between Afghan and Saluki people as to which breed is older everything else falls in line after them. |

He was running with a smallish (27-28") 2 y/o greyhound just yesterday stride for stride in our local 2 acre dog park -- it was a dead heat, though the greyhound outlasted him. Heck, he's just a pup, I was pretty impressed. When should I expect his puppy coat to hit the road? Any idea? |
I thought it was typo - Salaki's (pardon my ignorance)
|
Howdy Ron,
Crap shoot on the coat. One of my males really didn't have a puppy coat. My youngest male still has some fuzz on the outside of his rear legs and he is 4 y/o. 18 months he should be rid of everything except he could have a little on the legs. You could ask Jeff when dogs in his line loose it. Is your pup still intact? When he gets more adventuresome is when they really start getting away from you. If you want, go to my webpage in my sig. and check out Jazz. Those tri colored dogs all look the same LOL. Jazz is 27+ inches, I prefer my dogs to be about 25" and the females I like about 23-24". But that's me. Most people like their males to be 26-27". Think you might enter him in some running events? |
sighthounds
I have another member of the sighthound group. I have RR's. Or African hounds. They l o v e to run and chase critters.

No, I won't be neutering him, unless some unexpected behavioral anomaly suggests it in the future. My male Afghan has also never been neutered. I like the feathering, but the thick, long hair on his chest and upper legs lend a different look that isn't really very Saluki-like, if you know I mean. So you want your dogs fast rather than statuesque, I understand. Same with Afghans, it's the smaller members of the breed that run like hell. I'm also guessing that smaller Salukis fare better in coursing events. |
Quote:
A sizeable influx of RR people to lure coursing. They do love to chase the plastic. And good exersize. They aren't the breed of choice to go course jackrabbits but could be used as flushers. A good game for them to course would be coyotes. Sure could use one to keep my guys safe when they run into a yote. |
Howdy Ron,
A fixed Saluki becomes an Afghan LOL My 2 older dogs are fixed and we keep tem trimmed. I don't know how long the coat would get if we didn't A disertation on coursing hounds can fill a book...or 2...or 3 etc. For lure coursing the smaller Salukis can handle the turns of te course better than bigger ones. But you don't always get a tight course with a lot of turns, so a bigger dog can do well in it. Now on live game like jackrabbits (open field coursing) the conditions vary soooo much that it may come down to the size dog you like. The most sucsessful breeds coursing jacks are Whippets, Salukis, and Greyhounds. You look at the size differance and you can talk all you want about what size is best and not convince anyone. So it just comes down to what size you want. I like mine on the small side but I have had them from 24" up to almost 29". So much fun to talk Saluki :-) |
Hey Frank --
So I've heard -- three distinct Saluki looks -- smooth, feathered, and neutered. Heck, if I wanted to deal with the hair, I'd have likely picked up another Afghan. It's off to the groomer with him next week. I'm going to have all of the fuzz removed with a clipper, then wait and see how much grows back. It should make his forelegs appear a lot longer. I was told to pick up a stripping knife to keep it under control for now, though I've never used one, and have no idea how difficult or tedious that might be. |

Howdy Ron,
If all you have to deal with is the puppy fuzz, then it shouldn't be much of a task at all. Normally I just pull the puppy fuzz off the dog, usually it comes out fairly easily. Yes, he should look slimmer, trimmer and long legged :-) |
My parental units have seven Italian Greyhounds. It's my belief, based on pure experience, that the Italian Greyhound is for sure the dumbest of all of the breeds. My Dacshund, is a lot smarter than my parents dogs, but I know there are smarter breeds than Doxie's too. I also know that my Zebra, is worlds smarter than any of the horses, or Mules, or Donkeys I've ever owned. She'll outsmart them any day of the week.....Come to think of it, she's out smarted me a time or three...Anyone else here, ever been outsmarted by a Zebra?
|
Howdy Trukinik,
Can't say I have ever had the opportunity to be outsmarted by a Zebra. I have been outsmarted by a Saluki, so that tells you how bright I am LOL |

Pup pics!
|
Howdy Ron,
Looks like his legs are a couple inches longer <G> Got him trimmed!? He looks like one fast pup. When his chest fills out he will add some endurance to that equation. |
Ha! Yeah, he got himself buzzed today. We'll see what grows back. And I know what you mean about endurance, he was staying out in front of a 2 y/o female greyhound a short while back -- until he ran out of gas.

Southern Illinois Carbondale's sports teams are The Salukis...didn't even know what a saluki was until I moved to St Louis 25 years ago. I for one have a Boston Terrier who doesn't run unless he absolutely has to, then he won't go far because he's a bit of a lump.
|
Howdy Dave,
Since you have known about Salukis for 25 years, you are well ahead of the peple who still don't know what they are lol. Yeah, SIU had a good football team this year. Hope the basketball team can push through to the next level. Those Boston Terriers aren't real hard to catch. You have options. You can walk along and pick them up or you can wait for them to get tired in about 20 feet then go pick them up ;-) |
Frank, you're right on the mark...my little guy even has a touch of asthma and wheezes sometimes...and snores like a freight train. He loves barking at squirrels and birds but would no more chase one than learn to drive a car. He's kinda lazy like me...
|
My older brother attended Southern Illinois University, so I guess this is my second Saluki. I named my pup Tracy, that after a good friend of my now deceased brother, who also attended SIU.
|
Howdy Ron,
Here is an FYI for you. There are going to be some Saluki shows over the Presidents day weekend Feb 13, 14, 15. in Mesa. |

Hey Frank --
My little boy is now 10 months old, 27" and 57 lb. |
Howdy Ron,
Good looking big boy. Should be done growing now. Just has to fill out. Your next pic can you get a side shot of him just standing? How is the puppy fur doing? How is he running these days? |
I have this shot from about 2 weeks ago.
http://www.peachparts.com//shopforum...9&d=1262294572 I shaved him just before taking that pic. His fur is starting to come back on his outer legs (rears especially), and on top of his head a little bit, though it's laying flat and looks fine. It is not coming back at all on his chest or inner legs as yet. The only place he runs is in the house and yard. He's too scared to run at the dog park, and I won't let him off lead out in the desert until he's good and tired from hiking a few miles. I wish there was someplace he could just let it rip, but the desert terrain here is pretty rough on tender puppy feet. I'm wondering, at 57 lbs, is he a tad heavy? Think I should cut his food back a bit? |
Howdy Ron,
Should be able to see some ribs and the rear hip bones should be easily seen. If that is the case then you should be ok between 55 and 60 lbs. He will fill out a little more and be at the high end. As far as being scared. That might be the way he will be. Since you got him at a later age he probably just had interaction with his siblings and parents and didn't get much socialization with strange dogs. You might be able to help him get some confidence by just taking him out to meet other dogs. But I'm not sure it will help. Also he might be comfortable with certian dogs and not others. I had a rescue dog that was afraid of every dog that got close until I got him into lure coursing. He was one of the best. He was still a little shy standing still on a leash but had no problems when getting ready to run :-) Catch you later. |

Turns out dogs don't get asthma. Cat's do, but not dogs. |
Howdy Paul,
Interesting. I didn't know that. I posted the ? in another group. One person read up on asthma and said that dogs may not get it and the symptoms sound like indicators of heart problems. What was the diagnoses on your dog? Do you still have the one you ran with? |

Turns out she has allergies, so she's better now on the meds, but not 100%. She's 13 years old now, and in semi-retirement. She still thinks she's a retriever, so I take her to the park everyday to play fetch, which is her life's work, but we don't go running anymore. She's just too old and doesn't have it in her anymore. |
Howdy Paul,
Chime, my 11 year old doesn't go with me and the young guys into the field anymore. She will run a lap on the property and then lay on one of the beds outside to watch the world go by. |
