Atmos clocks?

Who here is familiar with Atmos clocks? I've always been fascinated with these clocks that are kept running by slight changes in the temperature around them.

Barometric pressure actually.

A large evacuated bellows that responds to atmospheric pressure is attached under tension to a ratchet wheel. Every time the bellows expands and contracts a small chain connected to the ratchet wheel goes to and fro, thus winding a small watch-sized mainspring which gives impulse to the torsion pendulum.

I've repaired countless Atmos clocks and the chief problems are bad bellows and broken suspension springs. Parts are still available and prices have come down, check ebay sometime and you'll see.

I have one. My grandfather left it to me because I was fascinated by it as a small child.

It has never worked worth a darn. But then, it's French.

Even when it was new (in the 1960s) it would run for a week or two, then stop. It was my job to get it going again every time I went to visit gramps.

Funny timing for this thread. I was at a holiday party over the weekend, and the host had one. Also not running...

Well, then you should get it fixed. I think they're beautiful clocks.

We have 2 - both non-working.

Look good, though. Time is correct at least 2X per day.

Carl - where do you get parts for them?

I use Timesavers, plus and outfit in New Rochelle that has tons of NOS.

Parts and service ain't cheap but when the clocks are in good fettle and SET UP CORRECTLY! they run forever, if not disturbed.

Anyone wanna sell? I'll give fair market value for them.

Funny - we're not far from New Rochelle. Maybe 15 years ago visited a guy in New Rochelle to fix 'em. Never got around to bringing them in.

Wouldn't sell - my wife inherited them from her brother and will not part with 'em - but thanks for the offer.

That "set up correctly part" must be the stumper.

These are what we have -
