Happy Winter Solstice!

Just a few hours ago (12:47 EST to be exact) we officially entered into the winter season. You could have fooled me with all the snow on the ground and the cold spell about a week ago that it wasn't winter yet.

Negatives-
Today is the least amount of daylight we will recieve this year!

Positives-
It is all downhill from here! (Daylight wise anyways...as the days will start growing longer (well, just the amount of light, not the days themselves) up until the Summer Solstice.

Here's a Stonehenge photo marking the Sun reaching just about its furthest to the south sunset-

A couple of years ago, my son was 6 and, out of the blue, he asked, "Daddy, when are we going outside to howl at the moon? You promised we would." Well, I had no recollection of any discussion, but thought, why not? Luckily, we had a clear sky and nearly full moon. We went out in the backyard and howled our asses off.

It's very liberating. I highly recommend it.

During the months that the days keep getting shorter I am not allowed to speak of it by the Lovely Mrs. W.

Its a small price to pay for an othwise perfect woman.

I would think that to the ancients the solstices and equinoxes would have been a pretty big deal. Today, the average person does not even realize the sun sets/rises in different places on the horizon (south of west/east in fall/winter and north of west/east in spring/summer). This makes the solstices the extreme points to the south and north to which the sun rises and sets. Pretty easy way to keep track of time when I couldn't just glance at the calendar on the wall.

Thank goodness for that - if I ever get to be rich enough I'll have a place in the southern hemisphere as well (and just hope I can still afford the travel costs)
