What do we all do for work?
 

I asked I'll start it. Former manufacturing engineer, recently sold small construction business, presently self empolyed consultant for a manufactured home company

Retired Physicist. Directed a radiation, chemical, and biological safety office for academic research and instructional activities at universities for 25 years. I miss the students and the research, not the politics.

I am a college student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and studying to be an airline pilot.

1. Full Time Student

I'm a sophmore in college taking 12 units.



2. Clerical Analyst

This is my "title" at work, but it doesn't accurately describe what I do. My parent's own physical therapy offices. I work at one of their offices in Huntington Beach. They have a contract with OCTA (local county public transit), to assess the disabled riders; to see if they are eligible for door to door service. I do ALL the paperwork for it. This includes data entry, scheduling rides (for the assessments), typing letters to all the 'consumers,' and many other tasks that go along with the project. I also drive documents to other PT Offices and up to OCTA... which includes about 200 miles a week, but at $.325 a mile, it's not too bad ;) I work about 25 hours a week. It's a $300,000 contract a year for this office, so it does put a lot of stress on me (from my dad!!), which I guess can be good. But it's also bad because I have developed a minor case of Carpal Tunnel Syndrom (PREV. Dx: Tendonitis).

So between school and work, I'm kept quite busy. I guess it'll only get busier!!! I just hate juggling between school and work!

College Prof (like JCE, Physics) for 12 years, book author, and computer technical implementation consultant for an e-Learning software company (juggling all three at the same time plus participating in three Mercedes lists and forums).

I am a physical oceanographer in the university. Two degrees in hand and working for the next..

Does some part time panel beating and welding works at my buddy's motor workshop over the weekends, as a pastime.

I'm a Partner in a small legal firm, and I do most of the things that get things going around here. Quite tired being an Attorney from too much pressure from the Court and Legal system, stress from clients, headaches from the firm's daily management, and all other matters not specfically mentioned. If I had a choice, I'd choose to be a doctor, or into Management of a business.

On other days, I advise a small bus company that runs over 80 fleets of diesel buses.

On the other days from the other days, I have a small trading house that does anything from the above mentioned. Everything, that is, except stealing, robbing, killing and pimping.

I'm a druggist working with a local retail pharmacy chain. I'm responsible for the development of all our resources namely the people and products we carry in our pharmacy outlets. It's a varied responsibility as I can move from giving out health advice and dispensing medicines in one of our pharmacies, to being an mc in a hotel coordinating public forums to sitting down negotiating marketing plans with our business partners.

At the core, I find that it's always a blessing when people come back to you saying that the advice you gave out worked for them. Can be stressful at times but such moments make it seem worthwhile. Given the choice, I'd also like to be a poet, a linguist and an art and wine connoisseur. ;)

This Time Around...
 

I'm an UNIX sys admin for the major computer manufacturing and services company. We are on contract to an aerospace outfit that makes commercial and military aircraft, rockets, satellites and space shuttles. My team manages every conceivable type and size of UNIX servers.

Grew up in the car business. My mom was Cal Worthington's private secretary back in the late 60's. Sold cars when I turned 18, wrote financing, etc. Bartended, worked resorts, managed bars and restaurants, sales rep for a wholesale beverage distributor, commercial photographer, Editor of Temecula Valley Magazine in the early 90's. Went back to school in 92 graduating with my degree in 96 from Cal Poly, SLO.

In my spare time I'm a soccer/baseball dad. My freshman daughter just made the Varsity Soccer team. My 5th grade son is playing baseball on a 'travel team' after making Little League All-Stars this year.

Just bought a house and took possession this week. I will finally have a garage and driveway to play with my car. I'm trying to paint and clean before moving early next week. It's late and I still have to roll a second coat of paint in my son's room before I go to bed tonight.

I am a child psychologist. I have an evening practice and spend the days at the clinic and schools. I specialize in children from birth to about 13 years of age. As many of you know, I have volunteered my time and expertise to the children of the World Trade Centers. Currently, I am seeing about 40 children and 60 families.I travel to the city early Friday mornings and return home Sunday afternoon. I have compressed my five day a week practice into four days to make room for this in my schedule. I also serve on the county and state Crisis Intervention Team. I am a very dedicated individual to children but the recent events in this world certainly have taken their toll on me. I feel I have so much to do, to offer help, and so little time......but we will survive this too. The children are our future.....look into their eyes and you can see it.

It's difficult to describe what I do. I have been involved with computerized automation in one way or another since '75. I go back to the DEC PDP8. I came through UNIX's, VMS, DOS and, of course all the Microsoft stuff. Hardware has been the PDP8, Data General NOVA, HP1000, VAX, HP9000, IBM RISC 6000, and PC's. My background and education until '88 was more hardware than software. Since '88 I've worked for several industrial automation software companies in a number of capacities ranging from development, systems work, technical sales and technical marketing.

Our niche industry has come and almost gone. I am hanging on now trying to keep the company I now work for alive. This means I do technical marketing and promotion, business and technical account management for some key partners, as well as occasionally do some system work. I'm wearing whatever hat needed at any particular point in time in an effort to help save the company. We just went through a pay cut, but things are looking up and we may turn the corner. I'm too old to get any opportunities in a new industry, so I'm hoping I can survive in this one another 10 or 12 years then enjoy retirement.

I hope retirement will be total restoration of Ol' Silver and finishing a small block Chevy powered, Jag XKE suspended Model A that I started before my son was born 21 years ago. I suspended that project to spend my time parenting.
