Get ready for higher cable bills

It says that I pay $4 per month to get ESPN. I don't watch ESPN. Wonderful.

Screw cable.
What I want to see is a service where you just pay for the channels you want and you get them streamed over the computer. I also want to watch shows when I want to, anytime with very short commercial breaks. I want a menu of what shows are running and to just click on what I want. Like Hulu does with just 2 or 3, 30 second commercials.

Quote:
1. HBO 2. Cinemax 3. Local broadcasters Heck I can get local broadcasters for free if I put up rabbit ears. Any shows worth watching are on HBO and movies are movies so Cinemax is also great. Screw ESPN and forget about all of those pointless channels like Lifetime, Oxygen, and USA.

My cable is bundled with internet, and is the most expensive bill I have with my small home, other than the mortgage and taxes.

I feel like a weird kid, but I find that I don't need a television. I only need the internet which in turn is a much more effective form of delivery than say cable.
Between Hulu, Fox.com, and other websites I get to see all of my favorite shows and avoid commercials. 24 isn't as suspenseful with all of the annoying commercials.

It's easy to "cut the cord" on cable or Sat . . . go Over The Air (OTA) digital and get a Netflix subscription. Nearly every popular series have DVD season sets, with bonus material, to watch at your leisure, commerical free.
The physical drawback is where reception is spotty or where the digital towers are in different locations requiring antenna re-alignment. |

I think in 5 - 10 years television will be gone in this country.
Flat screen hooked to a computer will take care of things, and the cable companies will have acquire other assets by then -- or else they will fold.

Wither the FCC? If the nation's "spectrum" is abandoned by broadcasters due to failed economic models, it may be interesting (or frightening) to see what regulatory scheme governement will hatch for the "system of tubes."

I was on Dish Network but don't really need it any more. Saves about $400 a year. Now I pull HDTV off the air with an antenna and do my recording and tuning with a Tivo DVR. subscription price for that is $120 a year.
I also have a Netflix account for $9 a month to take care of movies. I can also watch other internet content on the Tivo box through it's network connection. When I get my new TV, I'll move the computer into that room and get rid of Tivo altogether.

I have a home built windows media center attached to my TV.
I have 3 OTA tuners, that get all my local TV stations in HD, and also have the netflix plugin installed. That streams all the movies, tv series, etc, It also has a blu-ray player in it, so it also serves as my dvd/HD player. I also have a network share setup that looks at my desktop for shows and videos i have downloaded. Not a bad setup, but wish there was more HD programming availible over the air.

I've also given up on discs, I'm in the process of ripping all my DVDs to a hard drive (1.1TB and counting). I have no intention of buying a blu-ray, it's easier to buy content on-line.

My internet cable and internet cost more than my mortgage. I thought when Verizon showed up with their FIOS that prices might stabilize but that has not been the case. Comcast just upped my bill about $4 a month.

OTA TV, Netflix, and wireless broadband is a good match for me. Overall, it's costing me less than my old cable internet -without- tv, and is a higher speed.
