Thoughts on the NBC late night fiasco?

http://www.cnn.com/2010/SHOWBIZ/TV/01/11/nbc.latenight.negotiations/

I think its a swift kick in the gonads for O'Brian, who took over The Tonight Show so well. Rather than going out with a bang and enjoying retirement like Johnny Carson, Leno went prime time keeping Conan as second fiddle. Now that Leno's show tanked, they want to move him back to the "Tonight Show" time slot.

Any thoughts or predictions? I suspect Conan will pull a Letterman and switch stations after all this BS, and I will follow him.

I wouldn't either, except watching the NBC late night lineup has been a ritual for me for over a decade.

O'briens ratings were awful. I did not find him funny, the guy is a lot like Lettermen, he acts like a two year old.

I do agree that he's geared towards a younger audience, but I think he would mature. They didn't even give him a year. He also happens to be a Harvard grad. Many think the ratings are attributed to Leno's prime time show stealing folks away from the tonight show.

I think Leno is funny as well, but he can come off as more condescending. Making fun of stupid people is what he's good at.

They didn't give Leno much time to establish himself in that time slot. We usually just happen upon his show and stay there because he is mildly amusing. But it takes a while for people to change their habits and get used to a late nite host who's on during prime time. I guess NBC wants instant gratification.

Conan has moments of brilliance but I'm not sure if he's mature enough to be the sort of draw Leno is just yet. I believe NBC knows they need Leno about now. I don't know why, I liked him at 11:35 much more than I do at ten. And the shows were different. The easy chair interviews in the new show were awkward.

Conan might jump but does ABC want him enough? Is Letterman ready to retire?

Maybe now is the time to make "American Hot Wax 2"?

Harvard grads are only funny when they assume public office.

The only time I'm up that late, I'm either drunk or having sex, or both. The TV usually isn't on during those activities.

I think Jay Leno needs to go home and let Conan do his job. I remember when Leno was selling Doritos for a living. I don't think Leno is particularly talented.

I think he needs a show on the speed channel with his car collection.

Agreed, he's not a very funny person, but a car show would be great.
