Any numismatists here? Well, how about coin collectors?

My dad passed away two weeks ago and my sisters and I are going through his things. He left a couple hundred dollars worth of half dollars. Many are from the 1915 to 1960 era.

I've googled the subject and there seems to be a large disparity on value.

What's the best way to determine what they're worth and to actually sell them?

I used to use a book to get a value. I dont know the name, and I cant find the book, but it has a red cover, and at least back then, was sold in hardcover.
Scanning completed auctions on ebay might give you an idea what similar coins are selling for.
The book will help in determing how many were minted, and if there were any mistakes that year that got past the mind (making them more valuable).

My family recently held an estate action to liquidate an entire house full of furniture, coins, books, instruments, etc. The folks who run these auctions seem to have access to appraisers of all types of goods.

It might be less costly to take some down to a coin shop and ask them what they are willing to give.

If you had a list, I have people who do that, u they work from photos and lists and occasionally come down to view the actual coins, but not in most cases.

I would be interested in one from 1915, 1921 and 1950. Just one of each, standard condition.

Sentimental value.

I used to collect coins back when I was 12 and I somehow managed to gather up a very large penny collection from 1865 all the way up to 1979.

In Erie there is a store called Dampsy & Baxter. They are family owned jewelry store, but do a lot of work of appraising metals, jewels, coins, etc.

Go take a look in your yellow pages for local jewelry stores. From there contact them by phone. Most of the time they may forward you to someone who has a lot of experience working and appraising coins. Please don't go to a pawn shop.

I somehow managed to come across a 1909 VDB s wheat penny. The VDB are the initials of Victor D Brennan (i think that is how you spell it). And the S is where the penny was minted in San Francisco. There is some slight water damage from and mild scuffs on it but in my case sealing it in an air tight box will stop the oxidation. My collection is in a box somewhere and I haven't bothered to keep up with the hobby. The coin itself is incredibly rare and in my case is worth around $200 It's the most expensive coin in my collection.

I also have some east indian trading company coins from the late 18th century.

Fun hobby, but super nerdy I'm tempted to start collecting again now because of this thread.

I had a 1909 S at one time. Cost me about $25 in 1964. No VDB. Wheat ear pennies still get to me. Don't know why, I like those wheat ears.

I dig the old half dollars, the Walking Liberty half dollar is some kinda coin.

I do have a small coil collection but I'm more interested in a larger photo of your signature pic...

I have a bunch of old coins I found in my mother's house after she died. Some of them are dated as far back as the seventeen hundreds. Some are gold. None are in what you would call 'mint" condition, though. I know that condition is everything in coin collecting.

I believe I had started a thread about this at the time. I still haven't done anything with mine, but there were some good suggestions on the thread that I started.
