Photo from a canoe trip

This is a picture of some paddlers on our trip scouting Virginia Falls on the South Nahanni river. No, we didn't, we portaged.

Scanned some old slides and found it.

Looks like fun; is that a class 3? Did you do that in a canoe, looks like it needs a kayak?

Canoes. That falls is twice as high as Niagara Falls. Most of the rapids on the river are Class III. One rapid might warrant a IV.

Cool, but I would probably end up in the water, my canoe skills are not great.

Hey that's a pretty good portage rig. I've always wondered about getting one of those. Sits the whole weight of the boat on your hips right?

I took a pack frame and some 3/4" flat steel stock. Bent the steel stock into a squashed Z shape when viewed from the side, and coated the steel in a liquid rubber. One leg of the Z drops into the pack frame tube and the boat sits in the rest of the Z. Very comfortable. That boat only weighs 54lbs though.
It's a flatwater boat. (18' Wenonah Jensen) That picture was taken in the Quetico. I was paddling a Royalex Old Town Tripper with a fabric deck on the Nahnni. Don't think I'd paddle a Tripper on the Nahanni again. The upper section is very technical and rocky. Something like a Blue Hole Starburst, Old Town Appalachian or Esquif Canyon would be much better up there although the cargo capacity would be less.

Cool picture. Thanks.
That looks pretty spooky.

I prefer my water fast and shallow.
And - In a Ducky.

Yep, Kerry. I did manage to pull that one around.
About 60 yards down stream where that creek hit the Salmon River however… I went swim’n.

I'll see if there's a frame or two after that one.

“Pull…around” might be a deceiving line there.
That’s a push, not a dig/pull.

I came around backwards and then turned it “around” on the piece of flatter water beginning at the bottom of the pic.

Then things got nasty.
