Selling the Year One Trans-Am

My father has enlisted me to sell his 1979 Year One custom build Burt Reynolds edition Trans Am. Information about the car can be found here:

http://www.yearone.com/yodnn/Home/tabid/54/Default.aspx

They start at $130,000 and easily reach $200,000 all optioned out. This one is one of the early Prototype cars and doesn't meet any of the BanI BanII, BanIII criteria, but lies somewhere between a BanI and BanII. It was given away to a contest winner on a television series documenting the build. My father purchased it through auction from the contest winner. Currently there is a waiting list to get one of these, despite the astounding price.

Photos of the car here:

http://s251.photobucket.com/albums/gg282/tylerh860/Year%20one%20Trans%20Am/?start=0

Currently it is sitting at a custom shop while the hood is sent back to Year One to be properly re-done. The cowl intake was out of whack and my dad slammed the hood down on it. Costly mistake, but in a few weeks it will be a mint car again with only 1500 miles on it since the build.

He is wanting $79,000 for it, which I think is reasonable considering the staggering cost Year One wants for one of these. Being a Prototype TV giveaway car gives it an extra bonus as well.

While I have a lot of car sales experience, I have never attempted to sell any classic vehicle with this kind of price tag. I was hoping some people on this forum with experience can point me as to where to list that will yield buyers. Obviously I can't slap it on craigslist. I'm looking into Hemmings, Autotrader classics, TA forums and other web sites specializing in TA sales. I might even give Ebay a shot. Hopefully there's some experience here with selling high end niche cars.

Hemmings (where I bought my Impala SS) or a Kruse auction. With that kind of auction with TV coverage, the price can go crazy!

I'm not a fan of American cars from that era, but I have to make an exception for this one. That's a damn good looking car, where can I find that kind of money!?

Barrett-Jackson auctions seem to be teeming with aging baby boomers with deep pockets bidding on anything and everything Detroit iron with emotional fervor.

This being a recession year, more folks are dumping their prized investments, flooding the muscle car inventory availablilty and driving prices down.

However, rare models are always attractive investments, so you may still do well...

After convincing him to hang on to the car and enjoy for a while, he changed his mind again and wants to sell it.

Full description:

Year One, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of "Smokey and the Bandit" developed a Burt Reynolds Edition Trans-Am. Similar to the "Eleanor" Mustang and Chip Foose Camaros, this limited production Resto-Mod improves the existing car, accentuating the classic lines, adding a modern drive train and running gear, along with a total nut and bolt rotisserie restoration. The cars also come with an autographed center console plaque of the Bandit himself, Burt Reynolds. Year One built two concepts, named Prototype I and Prototype II for promote the venture. Prototype I is a 77 with a manual transmission and T-tops, and Prototype II is a hard top with an automatic. The company kept the first prototype, and gave away the second during the finale of a DIY series documenting the build. This second prototype is currently being offered for sale by private owner.

Prototype II comes complete with a pavement ripping 461 Pontiac V8, very cold AC from vintage air, power windows, locks, and an incredible Alpine stereo. In the 3 years this car was re-birthed it has only covered 1500 miles and kept in a climate controlled garage. It is still in show ready condition, with no cosmetic or any mechanical issues. It runs and drives like a new sports car. Also comes with poster sized magazine covers showcasing the car, and a high quality custom car cover.

Priced at $79,000… an amazing bargain, especially when compared to the astronomical price Year One wants for their production cars. Regular production vehicles start at $130,000 and can go to the moon with options. Also being one of the two vehicles to be used in the promotional run, seen on the covers of magazines and the television show, and the only one offered to the public, makes it a very special car. Feel free to call or email with any questions.

He is also offering a $500 commission to anyone who finds us a buyer, so help us out. No games here. If the buyer gives us your name from a referral, you'll get $500 paypalled to you. It is going to Scottdale for Barrett Jackson in a few months if it does not sell before.

Checked out the ad, and it's very well done.

Good luck.

to be honest, i can see why your father might be uncomfortable having it; too "priceless" to really enjoy and drive on a regular basis, unless you're ...Jay Leno? (hey, there's a prospective buyer; no, i will not be holding my breath for that $500 check. )

Arrow Correction...

In my opinion, year one for the Pontiac Trans Am is 1969.

I doubt Leno would buy it.

Back when I was into hot rods and American cars, Hemmings was "the publication" to be in for serious sellers and buyers.

Clean looking car either way! The body is straight and the doors are not sagging. I remember that being a common problem on these and the Camaro's. It looks like hood is "sprung" a little at the cowl where it meets the back of the fender. I remember that being a problem too. I'm no authority, but I had several friends that drove these when I was in High School (back in the early 80's). These cars can be built to "flat haul @ss".

There are a lot of cars out there for that kind of money. The trick is to find the people that are in that niche.

I think Burt Reynolds would have wanted T tops though. At least this one won't leak and ruin the interior and floor.
