Strong quake hits Haiti, sends people into streets

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- A strong earthquake has hit Haiti, shaking buildings and sending people running into the streets.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the preliminary 6.0 magnitude quake hit at 6:03 a.m. (1103 GMT) Wednesday about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northwest of the capital of Port-au-Prince.
It says the quake struck at a depth of 13.7 miles (22 kilometers).
AP reporters in the Haitian capital say the temblor sent scores of people fleeing into the streets.
The pacific tsunami warning center said the earthquake was located too far inland to generate any tidal waves in the Caribbean.

I was living in Santa Monica when the 1994 quake hit LA; the valley got a 6.2 and Santa Monica got a 5.7. The actual day of the "big one" was a mess, but the psychological affect of every large aftershock really jolted the brain each time the ground moved again. And there were hundreds of aftershocks going on for months afterward; I'd imagine it's the same in Haiti.

obviously a scam but dang, some people just lack common decency.

I was less than 5 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 Loma Prieta quake- a 6.9 magnitude. I have lived in earthquake country all my life, but that one really put the fear of god into me. Every aftershock really frazzled my nerves and for a few years after any vibrations or rumbling would bring it all back. I was in a room next to the elevator in British Colombia and I finally had to ask them to move me to a different room. I felt like a sissy, but I just couldn't take it. I really feel bad for the people in Haiti- it's a horrible thing.
